Good morning,

Welcome to another Sail-World Must Read!!

Today we have published part three of the three part Sail-World interview with Tom Slingsby, Olympic Gold Medallist and Oracle Team USA 34th AC strategist who is returning to the Oracle Team for AC35.

In Part III Tom winds up '‘Foiling made the 34th Cup the spectacle it was but it was pretty extreme racing. For all the computer sailors, the guys who sit on the Internet and say this or that the wind limits are too low, they need to understand the risks.

‘These guys weren’t on the boat in 23 knots when you are doing close to 50 knots in a bear away and not in control, the boat is hobby horsing and you are nose diving.

‘I can tell you that, I am pretty ballsy and I love extreme sports and I am not really scared of much but I can tell you that you are definitely on edge when you are doing a bear away in 23 plus knots and the boat is completely out of control.

‘You are scared. Some of your best mate’s lives are in your hands right next to you. If you make one mistake you don’t want anyone to lose a life.’

The Laser Men’s World Championship 2013 which concluded in Oman yesterday was a wakeup call for the Australian Laser squad.

With five Australians in the current World Ranking’s top fifteen, expectations were high. The Championship was won by five time Olympians and double Olympic champion Brazilian Robert Scheidt, who won his ninth World Champion title, while Pavlos Kontides from Cyprus came second and German Philipp Buhl third.

The Australian squad were down the list. World Ranked number one Tom Burton (NSW) finished ninth and Matthew Wearn world ranked number seventh finishing ninth. A good result for Wearn who has now joined the Australian sailing team, but disappointing for Burton and Ashley Brunning (NSW, ISAF World Ranking No. 8) who finished 30th, Ryan Palk (QLD, ISAF World Ranking No. 5) 57th and Jared West (QLD, ISAF World Ranking No.15) 59th. It will be interesting to watch the Laser squad in action at the ISAF World Sailing Cup in a week’s time in Mebourne.
