Australia's Malcolm Page shines, Laser Worlds, World Cup and more

'Action on Day 1 of the 2013 Laser Worlds, Oman'    OmanSail ©

The ISAF Annual Conference has just concluded in Oman and refreshingly the mood within ISAF, under new President Carlo Croce, is to listen carefully to the Athletes.

Through the Conference, it was clear that the Athletes Commission was having a lot of say, and they were being listened to by the ISAF Council.

Athletes Commission Chairman and Double Olympic Gold Medallist, Malcolm Page (AUS) spoke very simply and directly to the meetings on many points. He made it very clear the way the sailors felt and he was listened to by the meeting – they did not go against the Athletes Commission’s views. We have the right man in the right place at the right time now... thank you Malcolm.

As Sail-World has been explaining in recent months, Carlo Croce has been keen to tackle the problems of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. The Council voted to embark on a reform process which will take a couple of years at least.

At this stage the proposal seems to be that the World Cup events will be by invitation only to the top 25 sailors in the World within each class. There are several reason for the change, but the most significant is to lift the profile of sailing, and get more exposure for the Olympic side of the sport outside the Olympic Regatta. Sail-World will be following developments closely.

The Oman Laser 2013 Worlds started today. British sailor Nick Thompson was impressive with a 2, 1 result to lead the Blue fleet. In the Yellow fleet, World number one, Australia' own Tom Burton had 8, 1, and is fourth overall.

Only a little over a week until entries close for the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne for both the Olympic and Invited Classes.

There has been a big surge in entries, over the last week, especially from Asia. 15 Chinese sailors have entered, amongst them is the 2012 Laser Radial Olympic Gold Medallist Lijia Xu, the 2012 World Female Sailor of the Year, whose inspiring acceptance speech we published in full last week.
