'1384347 650040215028188 582823438 n - Day 3 - 2013 Moth Worlds, Hawaii'    Thierry Martinez/International Moth Class

Sailors competing at the 2013 Moth Worlds, which are being held this week on Hawaii’s stunning Kaneohe Bay, are enjoying light-to-moderate winds that have complicated matters a bit for the Race Committee but which have yielded some tactically interesting racing for the sailors. While the weather gods have delivered their share of light-air frustrations (read: postponements), the event has—at times—seen enough breeze to allow the sailors to light up their foils. And given the high-speed nature of this class, it’s little surprise that the light winds have still helped to create their share of cracked carbon fiber and plenty of spectacular wipe-outs.

According to the latest reports, 2009 Moth World Champion Bora Gulari is currently topping the leaderboard, followed by Nathan Outteridge and Brad Funk. Inside, get the full Moth Worlds multi-media report, as well as a great image gallery from Thierry Martinez, and stay tuned for more news from this event, as it breaks.

And in Olympic-sailing news, the racecourse action has also been intense in Qingdao, China, as sailors who are participating in the ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao have been encountering medium-to-breezy conditions. Call it a home-court advantage, but Chinese-flagged sailors have been sailing a great regatta and are currently commanding top spots in numerous classes.

'It's cool to get back into it,' said 470 ace Jo Aleh (NZ), who is again teaming up with Olivia Powrie. 'We haven't really raced since the Worlds so it's fun to get out there. It was pretty tricky today and pretty all over the place and we've got a boat that we're not quite used to so we're dropping things at the wrong time but it's good fun.' (N.B., as of this writing, Aleh and Powrie were convincingly winning their class, with a comfortable eight-point lead.)

Racing continues through Friday at this high-profile event, so be sure to stay close to the website as results become finalized.

Team SCA in action - Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 -  Rick Tomlinson

Meanwhile, in offshore-sailing news, SCA, the all-women’s team that’s competing in the next Volvo Ocean Race, has been pushing their brand-new Volvo Ocean 65 and their sailors as they ramp-up for next year’s event. The team has now completed their sea trial as well as their delivery to Lanzacote in the Canary Islands, where they will be based until next fall’s start.

According to reports, the team is trialing new members, and they seem pleased with the new design and with the mountain of challenges that they’re facing. Inside, check out the multi-media report about Team SCA’s progress and their learning curve, as well as some great helicopter video footage of the new VO65 out sailing.

And in Cup news, journalist Erik Simonson interviewed Pete Melvin, one of the principal yacht designers at Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ). Here, Melvin shares his thoughts on how the ETNZ design team worked, as well as his introduction to the team after he helped to write the AC72 class rule. Don’t miss Simonson’s full video interview, inside this issue.
