San Francisco Bay continues to drive national sailing headlines, this time with the ongoing Melges 24 Worlds, which are being hosted by the San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere, California. According to reports, the racing has been especially stiff in this talent-packed class, with plenty of well-prepared boats and teams representing their home clubs.

'It's tough sailing out there, with a lot of great sailors and a lot of good boats.' Said Brian Porter, the skipper of 'Full Throttle' team, which has claimed one of three bullets on the event’s first day of racing. 'It's good to get a race win because it gives you a lot of confidence to be able to pull away from good boats.'

Huge shifts and really variable breezes meant that the RC could only fire-off one race on Thursday, placing extra emphasis on the remaining two days of racing. After four races, Jeff Madrigali’s 'Mickey' is sitting in first place, followed by Flavio Favini’s 'Blu Moon' and Brian Porter’s 'Full Throttle'.

And in Cascais, Portugal, the RC44 class is deep into the RC44 Cascais Cup (October 2-6). After three races, Chris Bake’s 'Team Aqua' is sitting in first place, followed by John Bassadone’s 'Peninsula Petroleum Sailing Team' and Gennadi Timchenko’s 'Katusha'.

'The sea state today was something else,' reported Cameron Appleton. 'We had a cross swell that meant you were almost into the swells on a port downwind. It made it challenging to balance out the sail trim verses the waves and the way the boat was being thrown around, so the sail trim adjustments were key. We’re really pleased with today.' More, inside.

And in Nice, France, stiff breezes and big seas greeted sailors competing in the Extreme Sailing Series Act 7. 'We started really well today and were leading that third race before we nose dived,' said Rasmus Kostner, co-skipper of the Danish-flagged 'SAP Extreme Sailing Team,' who almost pitch-poled during racing.

'After we snapped the bowsprit there was nothing we could do,' continued Kostner. 'We managed to finish the race, but after we made the repairs just couldn't find the rhythm again.'

And in Cup-related news, Dean Barker, skipper of Emirates Team New Zealand, has continued his tour of the Auckland media after having lost the 34th America’s Cup by a mere one race to the Defender, Oracle Team USA. Inside, check out Barker’s interview on the NZ program, Radio Sport with Mark Richardson, to get some interesting insight as to what happened last week on San Francisco Bay.
