LVC updates, Dragons and J/111s—Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond

Racing has been on hold for the past day in San Francisco as both Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) and Luna Rossa Challenge repair their steeds after three tough days of racing that saw as many mechanical failures. First, Luna Rossa suffered an issue with their daggerboard, followed by an ETNZ hydraulics problem, followed by another Luna Rossa issue, this time pertaining to a wingsail control line. The net result is that the scoreboard now lists two wins for ETNZ, and one win for Luna Rossa, but, sadly, all of these points have been due to attrition, not match racing.

Meanwhile, Oracle Team USA continues to find itself in turbulent water over the additional 'illegal' weight that was found in several of the team’s AC45 class catamarans. Inside, Sail-World’s New Zealand Editor, Richard Gladwell, delivers a great look at the possible Article 60 (aka the 'Dalton Amendment') and Rule 69 violations that the team now faces, pending an ongoing investigation by the Measurement Committee and the International Jury.

Also Cup-related, teams are now preparing for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, which kicks off on September 1 and runs through September 4. 'On Day two of sailing the AC45s we saw all 10 teams practicing on the city front racetrack in front of many viewers,' reported 'The Objective Australia Team’s' Simon Reffold. 'The racetrack is going to be tight, busy and spectacular, this is certain... Every team here looks fit, strong and capable of success. Nobody has come here to be a participant.'

Inside, get the latest new from the Louis Vuitton Cup, Oracle’s latest headache and the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, and stay tuned for more AC-related news, as it unfurls.

And in Douarnenez, France, Dragon sailors are enjoying a fine start to the Gazprom International Dragon Gold Cup, where 77 boats are vying for top honors. 'We’re going to sail in very light and possibly shifty winds,' said Dmitry Samokhin. 'In such weather everyone has a chance which is good, but it is also challenging, as everyone in the fleet is a potential competitor or might get some luck. In these kind of conditions you really need to stay relaxed and our tactician Andrey Kiriliuk will have plenty of work reading the wind.'

Stateside, the J/111 North Americans just wrapped up in Chicago, where Richard Lehmann’s 'Windczar' took top honors, followed by Len Siegal ‘s 'Lucky Dubie' and Paul Stahlberg’s 'Mental'. According to reports, the secret of success hinged on sailing smart, especially on the event’s final day of racing. Find out how the J/111 class’ first North Americans were won, inside this issue.

May the four winds blow you safely home,
