Sail-World.com : Back in the boating world
Back in the boating world

'EDITORIAL IMAGE TO GO IN EDITORIAL'    Jarrod Day

It’s been the best part of ten years that I haven’t a boat to call my own. My previous job saw my pride and joy, a 485 hornet become garaged for most of the time with its only use during the seasonal run of snapper. Having to sell her, I have spent the last ten years either fishing from the bank, sand or stones or with mates week after week.

Well, I can now say, I’m back with a neat little package capable of taking me far and beyond the realm of what the hornet ever delivered. Purchasing a new boat is extremely frustrating and while the last ten years has seen me in the best part of 50 odd different boats of all sizes, searching for something with a budget is almost impossible, or so I thought. I’d found many boats I’d like, but none had all the little bits and pieces that I’d require. It wasn’t until recently that I had the pleasure of playing in a Surtees 4.85 that had everything I’d require for the styles of fishing that I do.

Last week, I reversed my Jeep Patriot to the trailer hitch and hooked up the tub, a 4.85 Surtees complete with all the necessities. A Garmin 557, Honda 60hp, electric anchor winch and all the bells and whistles required for venturing out into the big blue in search of the countries highly prized.

Having been back on the water, the maiden voyage was more than exciting allowing me to get back into my comfort zone.

Finally, I once again the ocean is my oyster and my endeavour to seek out the fish I have wanted to target in the past is going to be a real pleasure to do, I make the rules now.

Still though, having not worried about the little things when it comes to boating i.e.: petrol, life jackets, flares etc: things really mount up. Back to reality, I was very surprised that a little trip 3 hours to the west of my home town equated to around $200 in car and boat fuel. Despite the cost, it is good to be back on the water, all I need now I a bigger credit card……

Speaking of all things boating and fishing, the team at fishingboating-world.com have been doing their usual thing, fishing.

This week, Gary Brown heads to the Parramatta river and explains that despite the impression that the river is polluted, it is far from so. Gary explains that some parts of the river are banned from fishing due to traces of heavy metals but there are large areas which are more than safe to fish with plenty of species on offer.

Lee Brake heads out around the Cumberland Islands with Reefari Fishing Charters in search of Spanish mackerel. The mackerel were as rare as an honest politician, but there was still plenty of action to be found, especially on ultra light gear!

Carl Hyland looks at the coming months in Tassie and despite the freezing temperatures, snow, wind and rain the future outlook is unveiling to be a ripper trout season.

I revisit Victoria’s most popular surf beaches in search of Australian salmon. Within a stones throw from Melbourne’s CBD, there are a few surf beaches which fish particularly better than others. Knowing which ones comes with experience and this two part guide should get you well on your way to surf success.

Until next week,
