Marine Parks - Your voice is needed

© Jarrod Day

Those that know me know that I am one for not getting into political debates and try to avoid political discussions where possible, that’s just me.

Though I am one not to voice my opinion on these types of matters, the time has come to step up to the plate and voice my opinion.

We as recreational anglers are constantly under attack from the government and likely parties and while we all enjoy a spot of fishing from time to time, it seems that the current government wish to implement more marine parks and subsequently lock us out from fishing, period.

I am finding this totally absurd and please don’t get me wrong, but I am all for marine parks to protect areas but not to the extent in which they want to be currently proposed.

As recreational anglers we do, do our bit to look after our fisheries, doesn’t the government see that we have rules and regulations in place to look after our most highly prized?

As recreational anglers, we do not just sit back and rape the ocean of its fishes, no; together with the department of fisheries and other departments, we have implemented size limits to protect the breeding stocks and implemented bag limits to prevent over fishing. If there is anyone that knows how to manage a fishery, it is us as an entire team.
Fishing is a favourite past time for millions of anglers right around the country.

The industry alone nets billions of dollars annually, much of which goes back into fishing to further improve the management and upgrading of fishing locations and facilities around the country amongst a plethora of other projects and management strategies but do the government care, not at all. They just want to close us off from the water.

Can you imagine a world without fishing, I certainly can’t and I don’t want to explain to my kids that they can't go fishing because the government has BANNED it.

Unfortunately, the time has come for us to stand as one and fight for our rights. Let’s keep the younger generation fishing, let’s keep us continuing to fish and let’s continue to manage the fishery ourselves rather then having to sit on the beach dreaming about catching a fish. If we don’t unite as one all will be lost. It is up to you, join the team, jump on board and tell the politicians you care about fishing.

One voice is not enough but as a whole, together we can do it, united we stand.

If you’re up for more reading, then this week’s line up is sure to impress.

Ben Knaggs is back with a great feature on catching 'winter' billfish in WA. Around most of the country, the onset of winter spells the end of the summer game fishing season. The warmer, southward flowing currents of summer ease off come mid May, and the waters south of the Tropic of Capricorn become too cold for most of our large, pelagic predators. Marlin are by far the most popular and highly sought after of these game fish species, and winter fishing for marlin is basically a non-event in almost all of our major game fishing ports. All except that is, for those in the north of Western Australia.

Lee Brake hits the open water in search of Mackerel and it is along the North Queensland coast that the mackerel season has begun. This week Lee describes how using vertical jigging techniques can catch more mackerel and how much fun it is do.

Gary Brown describes a very simple technique used with a ball sinker that is highly effective when fishing. Over the years, Gary has used this particular rig when it comes to bait fishing and finds that by placing a ball sinker on the line that slides directly down onto the top of the bait is one of the most effective rigs that he has used off the shore, the rocks and out of a boat.

I decide to grab the keys to the next model in the Robalo boat range, the R200 and take it for a spin. Last month you may remember the R180 which is a neat little package but the R200, well I am totally impressed and better yet, there is more room and more power than you could imagine.

Also, it is the Melbourne BIA boat show time again which will be held at Melbourne Exhibition Center on June 14-17. If you would like to see the full range of Robalo boats or any other boats for that matter, best you get along. For more information check out the below links:
