'Artemis Racing upside down in San Francisco after a capsize on April 9, 2013'       Click Here to view large photo

Nearly a week after Artemis Racing’s AC72 capsize and the tragic death of Andrew 'Bart' Simpson on San Francisco Bay, there are still WAY more lingering questions than solid answers. According to the latest reports, the Golden Gate Yacht Club has assembled a six-person Review Committee to investigate and report on Artemis’ accident. This experienced team, which will be lead by Iain Murray, Regatta Director for AC34, will work in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard and will issue their report prior to the start of this summer’s Louis Vuitton Cup (LVC).

A four-team meeting was recently held in San Francisco, and all parties have agreed that both the LVC (July 4-August 30) and the 34th America’s Cup (September 7-21) will go on as scheduled. 'The America’s Cup will go ahead this summer. We will see the world’s best sailors racing at the highest level on one of the most iconic race tracks in sport,' said Tom Ehman, Vice Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

All teams are observing a week’s hiatus from sailing on San Francisco Bay in reverence and respect for Mr. Simpson.

It is not yet known what Artemis Racing plans to do with regards to the LVC and even the Cup itself.

Also AC-related, the German team racing in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup has decided to pull the plug on the event, citing safety concerns. According to the team: 'The tragic accident of the British Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson moved the Sailing Team Germany (STG) and the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) to withdraw. The 'STG / NRV Youth team' that had qualified for the 'Red Bull Youth America's Cup' in San Francisco, will not be at the start of September. The health of young sailors should not be compromised.'

Inside, get the latest reports from this tragedy and please stand by for more information and findings from the Review Committee, as they become known.

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, the fleet of eight Class 40s that are competing in the doublehanded Atlantic Cup are just reaching the Big Apple after sprinting up the coast from Charleston, South Carolina. As of this writing, 'Bodacious Dream', co-skippered by Matt Scharl and Dave Rearick, was less than 5 miles from the finishing line, followed by 'LeCoq Cuisine' and '40 Degrees'.

'The boat is hanging tough in the pounding but we do have a few leaks that will need to be addressed,' wrote skipper Joe Harris, aboard 'GryphonSolo2', who is currently sitting in sixth place, about recent onboard conditions. 'The sun did come up this morning and everything seems brighter when that happens. So we will pound our way past Atlantic City and 'The Donald's' casinos on up to a finish in Manhattan's Lower West Side on the Hudson river, hopefully sometime tonight.’
