Australia did well at the last Sailing World Cup in Hyeres which just finished on the weekend with 470 men combination of Matt Belcher and Will Ryan winning their fifth regatta is a row, Mat's winning streak goes back to November 2011.

World Laser number one Tom Burton had a great medal day, climbing from bronze to Gold. He has strengthed his grip on the World number one ranking spot. Four of the top ten sailors in the Laser rankings are Australian whilst two are from New Zealand marking the strength coming from the two nations. We have the latest World Ranking now.

Entries have started to flow in for the 17th Mooloolaba Etchells Winters Australasian Championship, June 6-9th 2013.

Entries are open with eight teams already registering (some of these have not yet hit the website list) with two Etchells Winter winners already aiming to make history, both the 2012 Etchells World Champion Tom King (2011 Winter Champion) and last years winter winner Matthew Chew (part of Jason Muirs 2009 World Champion team) being the first of many expected to enter this year.

In 16 years of the Etchells Australasian Winter Championship there have been 16 winners - a prestigious list - Dave Rose (1997), Russell Coutts (1998), Ian Johnston (1999), Julian Plante (2000), Michael Coxon (2001), Mark Bradford (2002), Cameron Appleton (2003), Grant Wharington (2004), Rob Brown (2005), Cameron Miles (2006), Skip Lissiman (2007), Graeme Taylor (2008), Damien King (2009), Alastair Gair (2010),Tom King (2011) and Matthew Chew (2012).

Will the list continue to expand in 2013, with a 17th winner, rather than a previous champion taking a second title?

The Steinlager ANZAC 18ft skiff series concluded on the Waitemata harbour on the weekend, with a win for the top Australian crew, Thurlow Fisher, led by Michael Coxon.

The regatta was a great effort by the 18ft skiff class, underlining the development work done in New Zealand with a 12 boat fleet including three Australian skiffs.

Next major regatta is the San Francisco International, which will be staged from the St Francis Yacht Club, adjacent to the America's Cup course. The 18 footers will provide a welcome addition to a program that is lacking in sailing action, with the skiffs racing both on the days when there is an America's Cup race scheduled, after the races for the day. Then on the days when there is no America's Cup racing, the 18 footers will sail earlier in the afternoon.

A strong contingent from Australia and New Zealand will be travelling to San Francisco - hopefully crews from UK and Europe will also make the trip to San Francisco.

The America´s Cup is entering a new phase with the launching and first sails of the Defender, Oracle Team USA new AC72. We have images and video of this occasion in this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter. The team are now in their suspension period, imposed by the International Jury for breaching the Reconnaisance provisions of the Protocol when their spy boat ventured with the 200 metre exclusion zone around challenger, Luna Rossa.
