Laser supply threatened, latest AC72, Aussies in Heyres, Etchells MW

ISAF and ILCA have been named a co-defendant in the legal proceedings filed in the US District Court by attorneys acting for Laser designer Bruce Kirby, over a dispute caused by Laser Performance Europe (LPE) refusing to pay design royalties.

Previously ISAF had recognised that LPE were no longer Laser builders and had stopped the issuance of plaques.

Major developments in the last few days with ISAF changing tack and now in conjunction with ILCA moving boldly to remove Bruce Kirby´s design rights.(full statements below).

However the collateral damages appear to be mounting. It seems there have been unintended consequences of the ISAF-ILCA action, is that the two Asia-Pacific Laser builders, Performance Sailcraft Australia (PSA) and Performance Sailcraft Japan (PSJ) have been caught in the crossfire.

The latest advice is that PSA and PSJ supply Lasers with the proposed new ISAF (non Kirby) plaques they will be dragged into the American courts too.

One wonders how this will all play out. It does seem pretty certain that this will be played out messily in the US court system and the losers will be sailors and winners lawyers.

Oracle Team USA 2 - Oracle Team USA launches second AC72 -  Guilain Grenier Oracle Team USA©

Oracle Team USA - launch of their second AC72 - The AC72 did attempt to have a first sail, but this was abandoned after a tow-out apparently due to an unacceptably high wind-strength for a first sail.

Said Jimmy Spithill at the launch 'It’s an awesome day. We’re all very, very excited to get it out on the water,' said Spithill. 'We hope to develop the fastest AC72 that will hit the Bay. There’s been a lot of energy, a lot of hours, put into this boat from the entire team. Now, it’s up to the sailors, along with the support of the rest of the team, to get out there and really try to get the most out of this boat.' Lots more news on this below.

Aussies at World Cup - At the final round of the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Hyeres, France, Australian crews have picked up race wins in two classes as light winds again kept sailors on their toes.

Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan have moved from their overnight eighth in the 470 men’s fleet to be fourth overall at the end of the qualifying series.

Belcher and Ryan opened the day with a fifth before picking up their first win of the week, locking themselves into fourth heading into the finals.

Oliver Tweddell began day two the same way as day one, with a race win in the Finn fleet. The 22-year-old led from start to finish and after five races is the only sailor in the Finn fleet to pick up two wins.

BTW - In case you´d forgotten the Melbourne to Osaka 2013 race is still continuing. There has been a lot of disappointment expressed about the lack of news from the race, contrasting strongly with that of previous editions.

The latest news is on Tuesday morning and, with just 200 miles to go, Escapade can feel Optimus Prime and Wasabi breathing down her neck. More below.

Sail-World will be on the water for the big ANZAC 18 footer regatta from tomorrow through Sunday in Auckland.

In addition to the strong New Zealand fleet expected to number nine boats, four Australian skiffs will cross the Tasman.

The Australian boats have been named as Thurlow Fisher Lawyers, Smeg, Kenwood and Team Daley.

A key point of interest will be a resumption of hostilities following the JJ Giltinan Trophy in Sydney in March, when local knowledge of Sydney Harbour worked well for the home team. 30 boats contested that regatta, and a fleet of 13 will be one of the biggest seen on the Auckland Harbour for many years.

Entries are rolling in for the Etchells Mid-winters in Mooloolaba. From the 6 - 9 June 2013 a fleet of 50 plus Etchells will be in fierce competition with six races over three days, for a title that has never been successfully defended in the 16 year history of the event.
