This week’s Grand Prix sailing news is about to be dominated by the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) Naples event (April 16-21), which is the last time that the AC45 class catamarans will be used in the 34th America’s Cup cycle. Eight teams will compete for bragging rights on Italian waters, and for a competitive edge on American waters going into this summer’s Louis Vuitton Cup (July 4-August 30).

The opening ceremony was reported to be a crowd-pleaser, with the Italian-flagged Luna Rossa drawing massive cheers from their hometown crowd when they were announced on the outdoor movie screen. Also in Cup news, Artemis Racing, the Challenger of Record for the 34th America’s Cup, recently re-launched their first-generation AC72 catamaran after extensive surgery in the shed. Unlike the other AC72s afloat, Artemis’s ride failed to get up on foils-a shortcoming that quickly proved itself enormous.

According to reports, inside, the re-floated first-generation boat still won’t stand up on its foils, but, says team boss Paul Cayard, it will bear substantially more load on its daggerboards than its Mark I trim. The Swedish-flagged team’s second-generation AC72-due out of the shed in the next month or two-will be a foiler, but it will be interesting to see if this gives the Challenger of Record enough time to learn to fly compared to the other teams.

Also multi-hull related, the Extreme Sailing Series Act 2 is taking place in Singapore, as crews contend with hot temperatures and equally hot racecourse competition. According to the latest reports, 'Alinghi' is sitting in the pole position, followed by the 'Red Bull Sailing Team' and 'The Wave, Muscat'.

'In most venues you would be happy with a 27 point lead, but 'Red Bull Sailing Team' had about that lead going into the final day in Muscat [Act 1] and 'The Wave, Muscat' was able to turn the tables and come away and win,' said Alinghi’s skipper, Morgan Larson. 'Especially here in this venue it's very easy to get a couple of last place finishes and eat away 27 points. We're happy with where we are so I think we should be proud of what we've accomplished so far and if it doesn't work out for us tomorrow we shouldn't cry over it.'
