'Emirates Team New Zealand sail NZL5 for the last time in New Zealand before being shipped to San Francisco. 3/4/2013'    Chris Cameron/ETNZ©    Click Here to view large photo

Psychology has long played a staring role in the America’s Cup. The time-honored tradition, of course, is to use public statements to try to knock your competitor off balance...much like politics or international business. The latest example of this thought control comes courtesy of Oracle Team USA, the Defenders of the 34th America’s Cup, as Grant Simmer, the team’s COO, shares some of his thoughts on the Kiwi-flagged team with the press.

'Emirates Team NZ is the favorite,' said Simmer. 'I would say that they are the favorites to win the Cup at the moment-from what we have seen of their on the water performance.'

And while Simmer might be using modesty rather carefully (read: tactfully), he was quick to note that the Americans are far from crooning their own swan song. 'We are obviously working to overcome the lead that they’ve had, and are confident that we are going to get there.'

Inside this issue, be sure to check out the great report that Richard Gladwell, Sail-World’s New Zealand Editor, put together on Simmer and his thoughts on the 34th America’s Cup, including the inside scoop on Oracle’s heavily publicized, boat-breaking cartwheel back in October and the rebuild/modification process that the team put 'USA 17' through, prior to re-launching her earlier this year. It’s possible that Gladwell also touches on the psychology, misinformation and the overall deception that is the America’s Cup, so this is a must-read report for any AC fan.

And speaking of Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ), reports are emerging from Auckland that the Kiwis have now concluded their training on the Hauraki Gulf and are preparing to ship their mighty AC72 to San Francisco for the July 4th start to the Louis Vuitton Cup. According to reports, the team plans to physically ship their boat to the States on April 16, with their first test sail on American waters slated for May 23. Don’t miss the great photo galleries of ETNZ’s last antipodean test sail, and stay tuned for more, as it becomes known.

2013 Trofeo SAR Princess Sofia MAPFRE; Nacra 17 -  Thom Touw_©

Meanwhile, in One Design circles, the racecourse action has been intense at the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre (ISAF Sailing World Cup), which is being held in Palma de Mallorca. 'Yesterday we didn't have a bad day but we did have a few bad starts, so our focus today was to have some good starts,' reported Nacra 17 sailor Karel Begemann (NED), who, along with crewmember Renee Groeneveld, is currently leading this brand-new Olympic class. 'The first two races today were pretty much perfect, but in the last one we were a little bit unlucky with someone coming from over the line a little bit low and giving us some bad wind but we ended up fourth so it was okay.'

Racing is, of course, proving to be ultra-competitive across all classes, with a full cast of new faces eagerly trying to show their mettle on this international stage. Racing continues through Saturday, so stay tuned to the website for the latest results, as they are made available, and be sure to also comb through this issue for all of the great multi-media reports from this Olympic class regatta.

Also inside this issue, don’t miss the event previews from the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final and the J/70 Great Lakes Championship Regatta, as well as the wrap-up report from this year’s Magic Marine Easter Regatta. Enjoy!

May the four winds blow you safely home,
