Windy Miami racecourse action—Sailing news from the U.S. and beyond

'Bacardi Miami Sailing Week 2013 - Day 3'    Cory Silken    Click Here to view large photo

The week’s big One Design news comes courtesy of the ongoing Miami Sailing Week, where sailors have been enjoying breeze, sunshine and plenty of red-hot racing competition. Stars, Viper 640s, Melges 20s, Melges 24s, J/80s and J/70s are all competing on the clear, enticing waters of Florida’s Biscayne Bay. According to reports, the breeze got big several times, with gusts piping over 25 knots. This caused some broken spars (two) in the Star fleet and triggered eleven skippers to retire from yesterday’s single race due to strong conditions.

'Windy for sure today, 20 plus average,' reported Star sailor Peter O’Leary. 'Once we got going it was a proper Bacardi Cup regatta, in which we stretched legs and hiked hard. The main challenge of the day was to stay in pressure and take advantage of the big breeze.'

Also in Miami, the TP52 World Championship 2013 is unfurling off of Key Biscayne. Here, eight top TP52 teams have gathered to determine 2013 bragging rights and to enjoy some fine, early season conditions. According to reports, they weren’t disappointed.

'Today we were doing the dictating rather than being dictated to as it was in the first race yesterday,' said Adrian Stead, tactician aboard 'Ran Racing'. 'It is a good feeling. I am pleased we have won three races on the trot and in that first race we left quite a lot out there on the racetrack. And now we are back in the running for the Worlds and that feels good.' And in college-sailing news, ten teams are set to descend on the San Pedro area this weekend for the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup/Cal Maritime Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta, which takes place this Friday through Sunday. Here, sailors will compete aboard identical Catalina 37s, swapping their normal dinghy-sailing skills for the teamwork-orientated jobs of racing big keelboats. Inside, check out preview for the weekend’s races and stay current with the website as news develops over the next few days.

Meanwhile, in America’s Cup news, Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge have been making the most of their training time together on New Zealand’s beautiful Hauraki Gulf. There, the two teams have been practicing their racecourse moves, including high-speed, foil-borne maneuvers that command the full attention of both the crew and all nearby spectators.
