Sail Port Stephens 2013 – Entries coming in fast

First sailed in 2008 the annual Sail Port Stephens Regatta is now firmly established as the second largest regatta on the NSW sailing scene, with many boats owners now making the event a core part of their annual racing program. Large numbers of sailors and their families are providing a significant boost to the local economy.

This year the sixth annual Sail Port Stephens Regatta runs from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st April 2013.

Commodore Dom Grundy from the organising authority, the Corlette Point Sailing Association, commented today:
‘Entries are coming in faster than they did last year, when we had more than 160 boats in all.

‘The Nelson Bay marina is filling up very quickly. Luckily The Anchorage at Corlette still has spaces available as does Soldiers Point Marina. Both of these Marinas have excellent facilities and are still very close to the racing.’

The Sail Port Stephens Regatta starts with the Commodores Cup for the Cruising Divisions which runs from Monday to Wednesday. The Junior Regatta will be sailed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The NSW IRC State Championships are being held Friday, Saturday and Sunday along with Performance racing division and the Elliot 7 Nationals.

‘The Junior Regatta has been going from strength to strength and this is expanding further with Open Bics, Flying 11s and Optis.

‘Entries so far indicate that we will have another growth spurt in the Commodores Cup fleet again this year. Most of the regulars have already entered online. Graham Mobuckson’s Margaret Rintoul V has been at every Sail Port Stephens since the first one in 2008 as has Peter Lewis’s Lu Belle and it’s great to see them back entered again in 2013. The Cruising fleets will be very strong overall with regulars like Keith Masters in his NorthShore 38, Robert Alder with Occasional Course Language One, Anthony Paterson and his Tow Truck team and plenty of other big names in there as well.

‘The feeder races have been very popular in recent times and these too are growing. There is a race on the Saturday from Pittwater to Newcastle and then on Sunday the race from Newcastle to Port Stephens.

‘The Sail Port Stephen social programme is shaping up very strongly for the entire week and we are in the process of finalizing at the moment.

The social aspect of events is important as family attendances at regattas are enhanced, with strong progrms.

What I can say at the moment is that once again we will have a Welcome Cocktail Party on the Monday Night, Commodores Cup presentation dinner on the Wednesday, a fun Mexican night on the Saturday and presentations on the Sunday.

‘Sail Port Stephens is now certainly one of the premier annual events in the region. We are very pleased that Destination New South Wales are back on board again supporting the event as is Port Stephens Council.

‘The event is certainly a boost as far as recognition and is bringing ever increasing numbers of people to the area.’
