Sunfish and sharks look out! Tri on Steroids set for Hobart record attempt! The boat considered to be the fastest in the Southern Hemisphere Sean Langman’s Orma 60 trimaran, Team Australia, is heading for Hobart this morning. Team Australia now has to beat super maxi Wild Oats XI’s fastest time of one day 18 hours 23 minutes and 12 seconds for the 630 nautical mile course, set in the 2012 Rolex Sydney Hobart. Team Australial has to average just 14.83 knots and, assuming a 10.30am start today between Sydney Heads, finish off Battery Point in Hobart just before 5am this Sunday morning, 24 February, to set a new passage record. The giant multihull is capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots but at that speed a collision with a sunfish or a shark would definitely be ugly. Based on the current forecast, the 60ft long by 60ft wide trimaran could potentially slice half a day or more off the fastest time. We will keep you posted... JJ Giltinan 18 footers 2013 – the really truly world championships of this spectacular class is being run on Sydney Harbour this week, with 30+ boats, the biggest fleet for eons. The last two races, (yes they are races, not heats because it’s not an elimination series. Yes we know that the skiffies have called their races heats since the 1890´s but the aim is not to confuse the FB and Twitter generations so races it is) will be sailed on Saturday and Sunday. Gotta to Love It 7 and Coopers-Rag & Famish Hotel look like they will battle for the title but it only takes one capsize to change all that. Sail Port Stephens 2013 is one of the fastest growing keelboat regattas in the Asia Pacific. With the NOR and Online entries open online at www.sailportstephens.com.au entries are flowing in fast well ahead of schedule. The regatta runs Monday 15th to Sunday 21st April 2013 entries are flowing in fast, tracking towards another record fleet. The Commodores Cup, a very social cruising event runs from Monday to the Wednesday. The two day Sail Port Stephens Junior Regatta, being sailed from Port Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club just in front of Salamander Shores, on the Tuesday and Wednesday. The NSW IRC State Championships will run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as will the strong Performance divisions and the Elliot 7 Nationals will be sailed again this year...
 | Pretty as a picture for Division Two at the top mark. - Sail Port Stephens - John Curnow © | In Auckland, Royal Freshwater Yacht Club sailor Sam Gilmour started well in the Harken Youth International Match Racing Championships. Gilmour is the second son of World Match Racing icon Peter Gilmour. He is ranked 101 in the world, and the highest ranked competitor in the event. He won six out of seven matches on the first day.
