JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiffs: A lovely sea breeze for Day 3 - PredictWind
|
A moderate to fresh sea breeze is predicted for the third race of the 64th JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship being sailed on Sydney Harbour PredictWind is showing a change of direction and strength from the first two races, which were sailed in SE winds, with plenty of holes favouring local knowledge and powered up rigs. Winds are shown as being a 10-14kts average meaning that the puffs will be higher - which could be a factor in rig selection, although most would probably try and get by with the big rigs. After coming from the SW early this morning, PredictWind is forcasting a swing to the NE, and for the breeze to hold in that direction shifting a little to the north as the day progresses. This shift is not expected to override local considerations. Using another feature of PredictWind, the realtime Observations, we can see that the breeze at Sydney Airport was 15kts average at 1100hrs this morning, and that the current direction is also as predicted by PredictWind. Further the swing in wind direction forecast for 0900hrs in Sydney Harbour took place at 0830hrs at Sydney Airport. Today should have the best breeze of the week, in what looks to be a light to medium breeze regatta. For the rest of the week, winds are expected to increase above these levels but not too significantly on the basis of current wind information. Winds will be back in the SE on Wednesday before clocking back to the NE later in the week. At this stage light winds are forecast for Saturday This prognosis has been based on a reference point in the centre of Sydney Harbour, and will obviously vary on the edges of the course | Wind Strength for Sydney Harbour from two PredictWind feeds - February 19, 2013 - PredictWind.com |

 | Real time readings at Sydney Airport using the real time Observations feature of PredictWind - PredictWind.com | Developed by former Olympian, Jon Bilger (470, 1992), PredictWind application was used by the Swiss team Alinghi to win the 2003 and 2007 America's Cups, and has become the leading wind system used by racing and recreational sailors around the world. It is available on a subscription basis and also with a free forecast option. A mobile app for Andriod and iPhone is available and PredictWind is probably the most used app on the Sail-World iPhone. Real time local wind observations have been added as further functionality. You can check the weather anywhere in the world, and get a five day forecast, plus a variety of other features and functions of PredictWind. The app is synchronised with your PC, so that your latest set of locations are always available without resetting each time you change a device.
