Vendee Globe - Golding approaches New Zealand gate
|
In the Vendee Globe, as of 0900hrs UTC this morning, Mike Golding had less than fifty miles to make to satisfy the requirements of the New Zealand gate. Although he is a little unhappy with his approach angles, Golding – who passed the 180 degree meridian yesterday evening - is making good progress. 'It is just steady sailing just now,' he reported this morning. 'The wind is building again and coming round nicely but I am not entirely happy with how I optimised my route to the gate. I should have taken a bit more pain and gone more south, but it is hard not to point to the gate and go fast when you have the chance.' As far as keeping Dominique Wavre in check, Golding is fairly content with his current position, some 50 miles astern and to leeward. 'We are roughly on the same heading and should be in the same breeze.' Jean Le Cam in fifth place, ahead of Golding by some 385 miles, might expect to open a few more miles on Gamesa and Mirabaud which are in slightly lighter breezes at the moment.
