Testing conditions on Day 1 for the dinghy fleet at Phuket King's Cup

The first day of scheduled races for the international dinghy classes at the 2012 Phuket King's Cup Regatta were today (2nd December), off Kata Beach and over night a storm had whipped up the sea-state making access to and from the beach a challenge. Principal Race Officer Mark Pryke, made the call early to postpone the racing and keep the boats on the beach.
While the windsurfers called it a day early afternoon, the dinghies held on and took advantage of the improving conditions, making it to the startline under a blue sky and mid to light winds, to complete two races today.
Forty-nine boats and sailors are competing in three dinghy classes – Optimist, Laser and Topper – over four days from 2nd December to 5th December, with overall winners in each class being presented their King's Cup trophies at the Royal Awards Ceremony at Kata Beach Resort & Spa on Saturday 8th December.
The 39-strong Optimist Class has attracted 6 young sailors from Qingdao, China – the first time the class has attracted international participants to the Phuket King's Cup.
In Race 1, Kitipoon Jumjorn took the win ahead of the 2011 and 2012 Phuket Dinghy Series winner Anapat Ngarmdee in second. Voravong Rajrattanaruk finished third. In Race 2, it was all change with Suthon Yampinid scoring the win ahead of Pongsapat Pomyam in second and Jarupong Meeyusamsen in third.
In the Laser Class, four Thai sailors battled it out for the honours on the first day. Kamolwan Chanyim took the win in Race 1 and finished third in Race 2, while Manut Plotong finished third and first. Nuttapol Srihirun of the Royal Thai Navy scored two second places for a three-way tie at the top going into Day 2.
The Topper Fleet is a new edition to the dinghy classes this year, and there are six on the startline provided by Topper Sails Phuket. Last years Optimist Class winner, Phuket-based Akapoj Kankaew, took the daily double with Australian Michael Tilden finishing second in Race 1 ahead of Salawutt Kullaatt who placed third in both races today. Sukawya Saiman finished second in Race 2.
