Fresh from bagging the gold at the 2012 London Olympics, 470 dinghy sailor Matthew Belcher wasted no time to begin his preparation for the 2016 Rio Games with a new crew to replacing recently retired Olympic champion Malcolm Page. Belcher will introduce his new crew on Thursday, the 22nd of November, at the Australian Sailing Team National Training Center at Middle Harbour Yacht Club. The London 2012 Olympic Games may only be just behind us but the Australian Sailing Team is already looking ahead to Rio 2016 with 470 gold medallist Mathew Belcher set to launch his new campaign this Thursday. Belcher won gold alongside Malcolm Page at London 2012 and eventually defended Page’s gold from Beijing. Following Page’s retirement Belcher hasn’t wasted any time in getting the ball rolling for Rio, teaming up with a new crew. The new pairing will race together for the first time at the upcoming ISAF Sailing World Cup round, Sail Melbourne, from December 3 to 8. Sailing was Australia’s most successful sport at the London 2012 Olympic Games, winning three gold and a silver medal. Australia also topped the sailing medal tally for the first time.
