Sail-World New Zealand: November 11, 2012
|
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for November 11, 2012 After six months of lobbying, Windsurfing is back on the Sailing Olympic events schedule, and the RS:X is confirmed as the class to be sailed in this event in the 2016 Olympic Regatta. In this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter we have covered the Annual Conference of the International Sailing Federation, held in Dun Loaghire, Ireland, and followed the winding path that the RS:X has been forced to trudge to regain its place at the Olympic Regatta. Quite what the fall-out from this decision will be, if any, remains to be seen. Certainly there will be a collective sigh of relief from those who have a vested interest in the Windsurfer and RS:X, along with those at a less than Olympic level who had committed to the Windsurfing event.
 | The 49erFX is already established in 21 countries, and has been confirmed for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics - Richard Gladwell_© | The good news for the 49erFx is that it has been confirmed as a core class along with the 49er and Laser/Laser Radial. This decision will bring more certainty to the various Olympic pathways. But maybe in a sign of things to come the 470 and Finn were not anointed for the next two Olympiads. Sail-World backed both the 49erFx and RS:X campaigns from the outset, and it is pleasing to see the successful outcome delivered in Dun Loaghire. The new President of ISAF is Carlo Croce (ITA) who won a three way vote. Adrienne Greenwood (NZ) takes a position as one of the required two Women Vice Presidents. Outgoing US Sailing's Gary Jobson - a former America's Cup winner, and noted sailing commentator was selected as a Vice President. The Vendee Globe race, a non-stop single handed circumnavigation, sailed in Open 60's has claimed its first casualty with the withdrawal of early race leader, Safran, skippered by Marc Guillemot, after losing her keel within 24 hours of the race start. Guillemot finished third in the last Vendee Gobe, and was race leader after the start of this year's race. We have coverage of the start of the Vendee Globe in this edition of Sail-World and will be picking up our coverage in the days ahead. Will Tiller and the crew of Full Metal Jacket have won the New Zealand National Match Racing Championships, sailed over the past four days off Westhaven. The event attracted a strong field including crews led by America's Cup Challengers, Emirates Team NZ's Rod Davis, and Luna Rossa's Francesco Bruni. The win is a good boost for the FMJ team. Congratulations also to Gavin Brady and crew, who finished runner up. We have reports and images in this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter. Luna Rossa have been getting good miles on the Hauraki Gulf, and are now on Day 3 of training, out of their 30 day budget until January 31, 2013. They had a good day on Friday. We have a gallery of images of the sailing and some close ups as they returned home, under tow, passing through the Friday night race fleet. In this edition we have several stories from Emirates Team NZ, as they get their speed jump - applying the development ideas that have sprung from the first 16 days trialling the AC72. They have 14 days sailing left to the January 31 cut-off, and given a reasonable Christmas break, should have used all their available sailing days by the end of the prescribed period - assuming they sail for two days a week. It seems likely that they will be the only one of the four teams who will use their full 30 days allocation. Sail-World.com was hacked on Friday afternoon and evening. several stories were deleted, that appeared in our Thursday newsletter. We can't restore these to their former location, but have replaced several and have included these at the bottom of this newsletter for those who missed them. Our apologies for the inconvenience caused.
