Study an AC72 wingsail-powered catamaran and you might see a few pieces of gear that resemble 'sailing equipment' as it’s commonly known, but the list is fairly short. Likewise, the maneuvers would seem foreign-looking and extreme to a monohull sailor-specifically the sprint between hulls during tacks/gybes-but it’s an art that must be mastered by September of 2013 when the starting guns begin sounding for the 34th America’s Cup.

Inside this issue, don’t miss the great coverage of what it’s like to actually move around on an AC72, and be sure to also check out how Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) is practicing for the dreaded plunge, should their boat pitchpole or capsize, a la Oracle Racing’s carnage last month on San Francisco Bay.

'What we are trying to do is implant memory into the guys of what it actually feels like to fall from over [35 feet],' said Calvin Hicks, ETNZ’s marine safety and medic officer. For ETNZ sailors, this involved a swimming pool and a series of progressively higher high-dive platforms and a command performance to jump. 'There were a lot of nerves initially, but in the end the guys all ended up pretty comfortable so it was a really positive exercise.'

And in closer-to-the-water match-racing news, the wildcard entrants have been confirmed for the World Match Racing Tour’s Monsoon Cup (December 3-8), which is the final event in this prestigious series. According to the reports, both Adam Minoprio (NZ) and Taylor Canfield (USVI) have been awarded these coveted spots for this year’s regatta, thus ratcheting up the regatta’s overall competition level.

'The Monsoon Cup is a big event with a lot of tough competitors who have been sailing all year, honing their skills and teamwork,' said Minoprio, who took two years off from match racing to sail in the 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race. 'We’ve sailed in Malaysia six or seven times now so feel we know the event. We just need to be back to top form and we can challenge for the podium.' Get the full scoop, inside.

And in Olympic sailing news, there has been some serious action to reinstate windsurfing-over kiteboarding-as official equipment for the 2016 Olympic Regatta. According to Richard Gladwell’s latest report, the Events Committee of the International Sailing Federation has voted to reinstate windsurfing-a big decision that ent to Council with an extremely close voted. Be sure to check out Gladwell’s report, inside, and stay tuned for more news, as it unfurls.
