Go-fast youths—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

Despite the impending pounding that Hurricane Sandy would soon deliver to the East Coast, the Storm Trysail Club managed to successfully complete a truncated version of their 2012 IRC East Coast Championship and One Design Regatta, with racing taking place over two days, rather than three. The event was sailed off of Annapolis, Maryland and tested each crew’s skills on both medium- and short-distance courses, in a variety of conditions.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) took top honors in the always-competitive IRC and HPR class (scores were kept using both systems) aboard their newly acquired TP52, 'Flying Jenny 7'. 'I’m extremely proud of our crew being able to step on a new boat and sail it so well against some very tough competition,' said Ralf Steitz, president of the USMMA Sailing Foundation. Meanwhile, in other youth sailing-related news, the promise of the Youth America’s Cup is looming ever closer, with racing set to take place from September 1-4, 2013. 'Prospective teams can enter the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in three ways,' said Iain Murray, Regatta Director for AC34. 'First, they can enter through an affiliation with a current AC World Series team. Second, they can purchase an AC45 and register a team. Or finally, they can apply and qualify through the Selection Series.'
According to the latest reports, the Selection Series Trials and workshop will take place on San Francisco Bay from February 9-24, 2013 and is designed to help ensure that the most capable teams make it to September’s starting line. Currently, 20 teams from 17 countries have applied for the Selection Series Trials, so it will be interesting to see how this international interest translates to racecourse action. More, inside.
And in offshore-sailing news, the Vendee Globe’s race village has officially opened in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Impressively, some 230,000 visitors have stopped by to check out the fleet of 20 IMOCA Open 60s and to learn more about this singlehanded, non-stop around-the-world race, which starts on Saturday, November 10. Online interest has also been tremendous, with some 200,000 virtual visitors checking out the event website each week. Get the full report, inside, and stay tuned to the website for the latest news from the Vendee Globe, as it unfurls.
