Sail-World New Zealand: October 28, 2012
|
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for October 28, 2012 The Italian America's Cup Challenger was launched on Friday evening at Auckland's Westhaven Marina. In this edition of Sail-World.com's online newsletter we have reports, video and images from the ceremony, and splashing of the boat. Regrettably, we had to shoot from locations outside the Luna Rossa compound. Meanwhile Emirates Team NZ slotted in another couple of days sailing, and have now used just under half their allocated 30 days, and at this juncture look to be the only team that will get close to using their allocated time. Twelve days have lapsed since the capsize of Oracle Team USA's USA-17 in San Francisco, and not a lot has been said of the condition if the condition of the first boat for the Defender, save for a brief statement from the team, which we have reproduced in this newsletter. America's Cup Uncovered, the weekly documentary on the America's Cup have provide a 23 minute video looking at the circumstances of the incident, and with comment from Brett Bakewell-White of Bakewell-White Yacht Design on the implications for the team. We have also taken a longer and more detailed look at what the options are for Oracle Team USA . Certainly they have a lot of work ahead of them with the build of a second boat and major reconstruction of the first, plus construction of two wingsails. Despite some obvious issues, we believe Oracle's program was near back on track at the time of the capsize, but all that changed at 3.00pm on October 16. For sure the team does have the infrastructure and facilities to undertake the task, but time is the big enemy - with just 10 months until the start of the America's Cup, and four months until the other teams can get their second AC72 launched and running. Oracle Team USA have to be back on the pace, with two boats running by certainly the end of February. There has been a lot of interest in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup to be sailed between the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup Match. Courtesy of www.pressure-drop.us we have a look at the detail of the event in this edition of Sail-World. Interest is also high in the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race. In this edition we feature a report, images and video of the progress being made with the development of the Volvo 65 along with Patrick Shaughnessy of Farr Yacht Design on the development of the new boat designed to be used for the next two cycles of the race. We have mentioned previously that the ORMA 60, TeamVodafoneSailing clocked well over 40kts during the 2012 Coastal Classic. Crew member Stuart MacKinven reports the magic number was 45.9kts - which is very good considering the World Speed Record until not too long ago was 50kts. Stuart has filed a report from TVS along with a new video which is featured in this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter.
