Yesterday, Emirates Team New Zealand won a significant decision from the International Jury for the America's Cup.
The issue, while ostensibly about a very fine and complex measure point, in effect related to the volume and therefore size of daggerboards used by Emirates Team NZ on their AC72.
In this edition of Sail-World we try to unravel the decision and explain why it is.
The upshot was that Emirates Team NZ can continue with their current foils. The other teams will be able to use the same bigger foils, but with the exception of Luna Rossa, they may have to change their boats to do so.
The Measurement Committee have been required to withdraw an Interpretation they issued, on the basis that they had effectively changed a class rule, which is outside their powers.

Significantly the America's Cup Regatta Management supported the New Zealand view - showing that they clearly are operating as an independent body.
Significantly, too, the International Jury rules that the Class Rules have to be read as written, not as people intended or would like them to be,
That's a warning signal for the move last week by America's Cup Events Authority to not require that all teams be in a common base location, and for their well publicised moves to move the hospitality area. While that may not seem to be a big deal to some, the simple fact is that both a requirement of the Protocol, and need the consent of all parties before a change can be made.

Staying with the foils and AC72 class, we have stripped out an image sequence which shows Emirates Team new Zealand gybing their AC72, and then lifting out first on two foils, then just the leeward one, and then for a time sailing with only one rudder's horizontal foil in the water. it is quite an amazing sequence - particularly as the AC72 is sailing almost dead downwind for a time.
We have a report on the Stack Winter Champs sailed at Murrays Bay Sailing Club over the weekend, with a gallery of excellent images from the event.

The America's Cup World Series wrapped up on Monday. We have reports from the teams and Sail-World's correspondent, Bob Fisher.
There's also a great sequence of images from NZ photographer, Paul Todd, who was on hand, with camera ready when James Spithill, did that spectacular capsize on Saturday, during the fleet race.
