Sail-World.com : Scottish RS400 Series at Port Edgar
Scottish RS400 Series at Port Edgar

Scottish RS400 Series 2012, held at Port Edgar, has drawn to a close and what a cracking end. A big thanks to PEYC for hosting the DBSC regatta at late notice which at one point looked like it might not happen. Despite the unavoidable clash with the nationals a healthy fleet of 10 boats turned out - including another two new owners starting their nationals 2013 campaigns early.

The wind was perfect on the Saturday, at the top end of a force 3 with a few gusts and some lulls which made for some good planing conditions but not too much for all the new recruits that Keith has been endlessly bullying all season.

Messrs Bedborough and Booth showed the way all day on Saturday with blistering downwind speed that saw them finish the day with a perfect three bullets. Kevin Gibb and Cody sneaked a couple of seconds in the first two races of the day and were looking good for a third second when their main halyard went in the last beat dropping them to fourth. Good pace was also shown by Roger Carter and Albert Einstein but again they suffered gear failure in the shape of an exploding jib car and unfortunately had to retire home early.

A great evening followed in the social PEYC clubhouse where amongst other activities adhoc live music, adhoc standup comedy and adhoc catch_the_velcro_ball_on_your_head games kept us all entertained until the Stewart Brew ran out.

Sunday dawned dry but completely windless however the wind slowly filled in and racing started on time. It was a light wind day and Dave and Jilly Harcourt stormed off the line but were overhauled by Roger and Einstein on the first downwind leg, these two stayed this way for the duration of the race. Out for the very first time in his new boat (collected on Saturday from Rugby), were John Mackenzie and Ben Gibson who sailed superbly and held third all race. During the next race the wind shut off but Keith Bedborough and Martin Booth were back to their winning ways. Roger and Albert had lead for most of the race but were taken on the last beat. There were lots of place changes down the fleet as it was marooned on the run. The last race was also very patchy but was much closer with Rog and Albert taking their second win , winning a tacking dual up the final beat with team race supremo (25 years ago) John Mac.

Keith Bedborough and Martin Booth were run away winners. Second place was taken by the Harcourts' whose consistent sailing paid off and showed that 2013 could be the year for them.

A special mention to Chris Dowie and Naomi doing commendably on their first RS400 outing in quite tricky conditions on the Saturday.

A big thanks to the OOD and his team for setting excellent courses in very testing conditions and to the rescue crews. Finally special thanks to main sponsor JP Watersports and also to Stewart Brewing and DH Systems for providing the liquid prizes! Next up is the annual AGM / prizegiving / curry night TBC in November.
