America's Cup - AC72 - continues to be the top story on Sail-World, world wide, with the first sail yesterday of the first boat for the US defender, Oracle Team USA.
We have plenty of images of the boat which has a number of unusual features, including a centre pod which seems to touch the water in some photos. Its purpose is believed to be a way of reducing drag on the struts underneath, as well as putting an extension onto the wingsail as a means of tidying up flow and reducing drag, rather than producing power.

USA-17 got their first taste of the ridiculous sailing days limitation rule yesterday, when their first test-sail had to be curtailed after two hours when their starboard centreboard broke. That's a full day on their 30day pre-January 31 allowance. In the USA-17 haulout shots we can see that the L-foil is clearly missing, and it is clear from the body language on skipper Jimmy Spithill, interviewed after the incident, that they are a little perplexed as to the reasons why - particularly as you would have expected the crew to be not putting the pressure on the boat for her maiden sail.
Luna Rossa have announced they have signed Franck Cammas in a coaching role. Cammas is the winning skipper in the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race, and former Jule Verne Trophy holder in the super-trimaran Groupama III (capsizing off Dunedin in the first attempt) but taking the world circumnavigation record on his second.
The signing of Cammas comes on the back of signing five key sailing crew, including 2004 49er Gold medalists Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez (ESP).
New Zealand's Alex Vallings has won the Nespresso International 18ft Skiff Regatta being sailed in San Francisco. Vallings and his crew of Chris Kitchen and Josh McCormack won from second placed CST Composites, sailed by veteran Howie Hamlin, competing against an 18 boat fleet from three countries.

In St Moritz, Switzerland, a New Zealand crew led by Laurie Jury have finished on top of the leaderboard after the close of the Qualifying Round of the World Match Racing Tour event, finishing with an 8-3 score. the other two New Zealand crews lie at the back of the field and have missed the cut for the Semi-Finals.

Two New Zealanders have been admitted to the OK Dinghy Hall of Fame - Greg Wilcox and Alf Lock. Wilcox has won podium places in four OK World Championships, as well as numerous NZ National Championships. He served for five years as International class President. Lock was inducted in April for his work on the class rules and measurement, bringing to an end a long era of illegal hull shape fiddling, with his measurement jig system. There were some other illustrious sailors inducted, including Paul Elvstrom (DEN).
Sail-World set new all-time visitor records for August, and recorded 815,000 visits for the month of August - an increase of almost 300,000 visits per month from March. And to count as a visit in our statistics a reader has to actually open a story, not just flick over the front page and be counted as an impression.
That represents a big gain in reach for Sail-World advertisers - with no increase in rate - and compares more than favorably with other media.

The Paralympics got underway overnight NZ time - New Zealand has two crews competing for the first time since 2000 Olympics. Sailing on the Portland Harbour course (effectively a man-made lagoon) the two NZ crews have finished 10th and 11th after the points were tallied for the first day.
We feature images and reports in this newsletter edition of Sail-World.com from the Paralympics. We had hoped that there would be live Youtube or delayed coverage, as with many other sports, but that does not seem to be available, save for some clips with the British sailors produced by the RYA, which we have included with the international reports from the ISAF.
