Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for August 30, 2012

America's Cup - AC72 - news is the main point of interest today.

Yesterday Emirates Team NZ took their AC72 out for her fourth day of sailing, and according to some reports, were able to get the catamaran up on her foils and clear of the water.

Emirates Team NZ have released some photos from yesterday's session, and a video, which we have featured in this edition of Sail-World. However while they do show that she is using L-foils, there is nothing out officially which shows the foiling flight.

If Emirates Team NZ were a bit grumpy after the America's Cup World Series in San Francisco, yesterday's sail seemed to be the right antidote.

In San Francisco, the launch planned for this morning by Oracle Team USA of their AC72. The launch and planned media event were called off for unspecified reasons, and will take place next week. We do have some images from the event - most unfortunately are badly lit, and deliberately so. However there is enough to be seen of the boat and her wingsail from a previous day.

America's Cup sailor, double Olympic medalist and top coach, Rod Davis, continues his commentary series in this edition looking at how far the America's Cup multihulls have progressed from 1988 to 2012. And there's a few subtle life lessons in there, too.

New Zealand's Alex Vallings continues to lead the Nespresso International 18ft Skiff Regatta being sailed in San Francisco. Vallings and his crew of Chris Kitchen and Josh McCormack have a lead of seven points over the second placed CST Composites, sailed by veteran Howie Hamlin, sailing against an 18 boat fleet.

We have reports on the first three days of racing in this edition of Sail-World.

In St Moritz, Switzerland, a New Zealand crew led by Laurie Jury have taken the lead after the first day of the World Match Racing Tour event, scoring five wins from five races. A second NZ crew led by Josh Junior lie in 10th overall, and Waka Racing (Phil Robertson) fresh from duty on China Team in the recent America's Cup World Series in San Francisco, trails the fleet - however they are a crew who has only sailed three matches, while others have sailed five, thus far in the regatta.

Sail-World has set new all-time visitor records for August, and look set to go through the 800,000 visitors mark for the month of August - that is an increase of almost 300,000 visits per month from March. And to count as a visit in our statistics a reader has to actually open a story, not just flick over the front page and be counted as an impression.

That represents a big gain in reach for Sail-World advertisers - with no increase in rate - and compares more than favorably with other media.

Much of the gain comes from our Olympic and Australian offshore regatta coverage - which really jumped our readership, and we expect that to settle back in September, but even so we expect a substantial portion to remain.

In this edition we feature the first in a series about the 2012 Olympics, and what happened from an inside perspective. The first, is a scene setter. A little boring perhaps, but it is important to understand the background to the venue, before we get into a couple of other areas - being the media and what happened event by event, and commenting on where we see the Olympics heading, with so many classes changing.

With 30,000 images from the 2012 Olympic Regatta there is no shortage of illustrations - but finding the right one is not always easy! We will be featuring a lot of new material in these review and commentary stories.

Many thanks to those who have contributed to this edition, particularly those using our online submission and image loading facility which can be accessed by clicking here

Good sailing!
