PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam day 9 proved to be another largely frustrating day with sailors being held on standby for the entire day.
However their patience was eventually rewarded when the wind properly arrived at quarter past five, having teased the competitors for most of the day. Today proved to be another successful day for Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins / Chris Benz) as she produced another flawless display to defeat Laure Treboux (Fanatic / North) in the women’s winners’ final. The men’s first round of the double elimination was completed but only one heat of the second round could be completed as the wind deteriorated later in the evening.
Women’s Double Elimination - Winners’ Final
Sarah-Quita Offringa once again showcased her truly world class ability to successfully defend her single elimination title and in doing so she cements her place at the top of the rankings. Offringa opened the heat with an e-slider before performing an absolutely perfect switch chachoo to make a great start to the winners’ final. Laure Treboux was back to her usual slick self as she glided her way through silky smooth flakas, grubbys and switch konos, however the lady from Aruba sailed an incredible heat to keep Treboux at bay, for the time being at least. Offringa landed a radical kono, a sick shaka and a simply brilliant toad to leave the judges with no doubt in their minds about the decision. It was soon revealed that Offringa had defeated Treboux as they continue their battle of the finals.
Losers’ Final
Yoli Freites De Brendt (Fanatic / North) maintained her place on the podium after seeing off the competition of Arrianne Aukes (RRD / Simmer / Maui Ultra Fins / AL360). On her way to victory the Venezuelan delivered a diverse repertoire of tricks ranging from flakas to e-sliders. Aukes tried to respond but she couldn’t quite match Freites De Brendt on this occasion as she finished in fourth place.
Men’s Double Elimination
The first round of the double elimination saw an extremely high level of sailing as the men fought tooth and nail with each other for a place in the second round. Heat twenty-seven saw Tony Mottus (JP / NeilPryde) dispatch of Stefanos Damianos (Simmer / Patrik), whilst Maarten Van Ochten (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) advanced into the next round after performing a last minute burner to steal the heat from Phil Richards (F2 / Severne).
Meanwhile heat twenty-eight proved to be another heat packed with drama as Amado Vrieswijk (Starboard / Severne) and Adam Sims (Patrik) enjoyed an extremely tight battle. In the end an outstanding skopu from Vrieswijk swung the heat in his favor and he now progresses into the second round. The B-side of the heat saw the first upset of the day as Paul Zeper (Patrik / Hot Sails Maui) produced an amazing display to knock out Tilo Eber (JP / NeilPryde).
Bryan Metcalf-Perez (JP / NeilPryde) and Adrian Beholz (Fanatic / Sailloft Hamburg / Maui Ultra Fins) successfully negotiated their way into the next round after defeating Jamie Drummond (Starboard / Severne / Mystic) and Loic Spicher (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) respectively. In heat thirty Andy Lachauer (JP / NeilPryde) looked dangerous in the lighter winds as he ended the hopes of Danny Kater (Tabou / Gaastra / Mystic). The German landed a sick air flaka and a skopu to knock out his opponent as he took full advantage of every gust. Whilst Nicola Spadea (Starboard / Gun Sails) dispatched of Oliver Stauffacher (Gaastra / Patrik / MFC).
Heat thirty saw the standout performance of the first round by Deivis Paternina Teran (Hot Sails Maui). The Venezuelan was in irresistible form, with a massive switch chachoo and a brilliant shuvit spock being the highlights. This proved too much for the young Italian Francesco Cappuzzo (RRD / AL360). In the other side of the heat seventeen year old Rafael De Windt (Hot Sails Maui) produced a performance beyond his years to knock out Adrien Bosson (Fanatic / North / Maui Ultra Fins).
The last heat of the first round, heat thirty-two, saw a close fought encounter between Mattia Fabrizi (Fanatic / North) and Max Matissek (Fanatic / North). The battle of the teammates saw Fabrizi edge the contest as he landed amazing culos and konos to progress. Meanwhile Edvan De Souza Pedro (RRD) produced a solid display to claim victory against Choco Frans.
The second round saw Rick Jendrusch (F2 / Severne / Mystic) up against Max Rowe (Fanatic / North) whilst Tony Mottus (JP / NeilPryde) took on Maarten Van Ochten. In the A-side of the heat Max Rowe produced a diverse performance as the Brit landed a huge air funnel and a textbook switch flaka to defeat the talented Jendrusch. Whilst Van Ochten had the upper hand over Mottus to ensure his inclusion in the third round.
Heat thirty-five was started but the wind had already begun to deteriorate by this point and midway through the heat it had to be cancelled, which brought the penultimate day to a close.
