The Australian Sports Boat Association (ASBA) National Titles finished up at the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria on Easter Monday with all 10 races completed over the Easter weekend.

The series was dominated by NSW entry Zippier (Andrew Waugh) who has now competed in all six ASBA National Titles and finally taking out the coveted winner’s Gill Jacket for the first time. Zippier was also the winner in Division 1 with this being the first National Titles using two Divisions.

Conditions over the weekend were testing with the breeze never exceeding 15 knots at any time, with most races completed in the 8-10 knot range. A big thank you to Event Race Officer David Le Roy and his team, and volunteers from RYCV on running a great event.

The Winner of Division 2 and second overall was Octopussy (Rees Howell). The Octopussy crew improved as the event went on and along with Zippier, where the stand out crew of the event, making the long journey from Perth worthwhile.

Second in Division 2 and third overall was the 2012 National Champion, Kaito (Tom Kelly). Three of the four crew where enjoying their second Sports Boat event on Kaito, the first being the VIC State Titles the weekend before the Nationals.

Winner of the Facebook National Title was Weapon of Choice (Fred Kasparek) from the ACT, with over 120 likes.

‘Personality of the Regatta’ went to the skipper of The Duck Nuts, also from Perth, Mitch de Vries for his outstanding efforts off and on the water on every day of the event.

In true Sports Boat tradition just about all crews went home with something under their arm from 3 Oceans Winery, Gill Australia or Hogs Breath Cafe. The 3 Oceans Magnums were the most popular and will be enjoyed by all. With the support of our sponsors ASBA was able to award prizes down to sixth place in each Division.

The series though belonged to the Zippier crew who sailed the pants off the Thompson 8 design boat – the previous owner also wants to buy her back as well now. Full results are on the ASBA web site along with a photo gallery provided by Teri Dodds.

The 2014 National Titles are locked in for the Fremantle Sailing Club, Western Australia, from January 2-5. A number of east coast boats have already committed to attending the event, including Zippier and 2011 National Champion, Brett Whitbread's Crank.

There is plenty of Sports Boat events organised between now and the 2014 Nationals, including the Winter Nationals in Mooloolaba in June, with all the information on the ASBA web site. There is also plenty of great second hand boats on the web site to help you get into the fleet.

Find some friends and come for a sail.
