Zhik 420/470 NSW State Championships - Elites to battle it out
|
The Zhik 420/470 NSW State Championships for 2012-13 is set to begin off Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) this weekend with a range of top level sailors from around the State lining up to take the title. The two day regatta is aiming for six races and is looking forward to the partnership of the youth training class of the 420s and the Olympic class 470s. The 470s are coming off their Australian titles in Port Stephens and will be looking to continue the fierce racing this weekend. From all reports it was some of the most competitive racing the 470 class has had in years with all boats in for a chance to take the lead. Matt Belcher and Will Ryan will be looking to continue their unbeaten regatta run. However Angus Galloway and Tim Hannah will also be aiming to go one better after coming second at the Australian Titles and will be closely followed by the family teams of the Crawford and Conway brothers. The 420s have had a big resurgence over the past couple of years and are looking at having up to 20 – 25 420s enter the regatta. The class has seen a lot of clubs beginning to utilise them including MHYC, Hunters Hill SC, RPAYC and Georges River Sailing Club. Leading the way for the 420s will be Xavier Winston Smith and Josh Dawson on Team Seldon. They will be looking to keep up the trend of being the lead boat in NSW after an impressive nationals and youth campaign.
 | James Griffin and Tom Milburn sailing at Middle Harbour Yacht Club - Zhik NSW 420/470 State Championships - Lachlan Pryor | Fighting to knock them off their perch will be Caitlin Tames and Chelsea Powe as well as James Griffin and Tom Milburn. Both teams have been inconsistent and will be looking for a solid regatta to take the title. Dante Oliveri and Alex Marzano from Port Kembla will be hunting a podium position after rising through the fleet this year. With the forecast for strong winds, it will definitely be a regatta to keep an eye on. Entries and information on the regatta can be found at Zhik 420 and 470 NSW State Championships website.
