Youth Worlds - Australian crew leads multihull class

The OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Sailing Team crew of Chase Lurati and Paul Darmanin has surged into the lead in the multihull class after day two of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey.

Lurati and Darmanin finished second in the day’s only race, giving them a one point overall lead from brothers Daniel and Nicolaj Bjornholt of Denmark with the third placed French crew a point further back.

The Australian crew’s position is even more impressive when you take into account the fact that they had never sailed an SL16 before arriving in Turkey and only had two days of practice before racing began on Sunday.

A lack of wind kept the fleets on shore for most of the day and when racing did finally get underway late in the afternoon the crews were greeted with a breeze of only about five knots.

Angus Galloway and Alex Gough were the big movers in the 420 boys fleet with their seventh place race finish, jumping them from their overnight position of 17th to ninth overall.

The Queensland crew is tied on points with eighth position and just 14 off fifth position with plenty of racing left in the regatta.

In the girls 420 class Ashley Warlow and Elloise Brake are in 21st position after crossing the line in Monday’s race in 17th.

Byron White and Thomas Koerner slipped slightly from their overnight eighth position to be 12th after day two, finishing with and 11th and an eighth in the day’s two races.

Alexandra South was the big improver in the Laser Radial girls class with her sixth place finish on Monday seeing her move up to 16th overall from her day one position of 27th.

Ben Franklin had a tough day in the Laser Radial boys after being squeezed for room at the bottom mark while being just outside the top 10. Franklin was 45th in the race and is now 47th overall.

Joanna Sterling maintained her 13th position in the windsurfer girls class after a 10th and a 12th while fellow windsurfer Eamon Robertshaw is 14th in the boys class finishing with a 13th and a 19th.

Racing continues in Istanbul on Tuesday with the 2010 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship running until July 17.
