Young New Zealand 470 sailors, Finn Drummond and Frankie Lardies report on the 470 World Championships in Netherlands, earlier this month:

Hi Everyone,

We have now finished the 470 worlds held in Den Haag.

The last qualifying race unfortunately didn’t eventuate with some extreme winds and waves to deal with. The race was scheduled for 10am and after a 1 hour delay we went out into some of the most extreme conditions we had experienced. There was 30 knots with gusts of up to 40 with very steep big waves. There was lots of carnage and damaged equipment on the water and we were glad just to get in with no broken gear. They tried to get some more races in when the wind had died away at 8pm but we struggled getting upwind against the tide and git in at 9:30pm with no races done!

So unfortunately we didn’t make gold fleet and started silver racing the following day. We had winds of 25 knots and big waves. Shortly after the start our main halyard broke and we had to retire to fix it. We made it back out for the next two races and got a 2nd and a 18th.

The next day was around 18 knots and we had a 18, 6, 7 to have a solid day on the water. We were happy with our speed and are starting better to feel much more comfortable in the worlds standard fleet.

The last day of worlds was a light 8 knot breeze with a small chop. We had good speed and were first to the top mark with Japan close behind. We match raced them for the rest of the race well ahead of the fleet but they beat us, finishing second in the race.

Overall we finished 8th in the silver fleet. We were still happy with this result as it was our first 470 worlds and it was cool to see the level that we need to get to. We are now much more comfortable in all aspects of our sailing and are looking forward to our next major regatta, sail for gold at Weymouth.

We have now made it to Weymouth after a few too many wrong turns, to drop the boats off and are off to Paris for a few days to sightsee and cheer on at the Tour de France finish before returning for a training camp before the sail for gold regatta.
