Yes Yendys has won Hamilton Island series

by Rob Kothe on 25 Aug 2007
Yendys heads wide for Whitehaven Sail-World.com /AUS http://www.sail-world.com
Dockside this afternoon when Geoff Ross, the owner of the Reichel Pugh 55 Yendys berthed in the Hamilton Island Marina, Island owner Bob Oatley and the skipper of Wild Oats Mark Richards were there to shake his hand.

On their own calculations Ross had beaten them in the final race of the 24th annual Audi Hamilton Island Race Week and had therefore won the prestigious IRC division.

Ross, the 1999 Sydney to Hobart winner commented, ‘It was a little boat race, the wind has now turned and with the wind more easterly, they will be blown home.

‘We were deep today but Wild Oats more so, so that was both our drops and we’ve apparently won the regatta. We are still waiting for confirmation of that but regardless, we are very pleased with the week’s racing.

‘The aim of this week was to work hard to get the boat going and work together as a strong crew unit as part of our 2007 Rolex Sydney to Hobart preparation.

‘It’s very pleasing that we managed to get the boat going so well in light airs and down wind.

‘There were a lot of boats sailing well this week. We were always behind Wild Oats X and we could see she was well sailed. The overall standard is very high, Wild Joe, Quest, Quantum, Quest – there is only seconds between all these boats.

‘The weather has been kind to us this week, we’ve enjoyed it a lot and now we are looking forward to a solid campaign leading up to the Hobart race.’

The smaller boats are only just finishing now and results are not yet confirmed.

Back of the envelope IRC scoring from the top fleet navigators suggest that the series has been won by Yendys, from Wild oats with Wild Joe third ahead of Beau Geste, Quantum and Quest. We shall we hope soon see if that is correct.

We now have confirmation.
