The 2012 New Zealand Laser Class Championships will be hosted by the Worser Bay Boating Club in Wellington from the 21st to 24th January 2012.

The New Zealand Laser championship is one of New Zealand’s largest dinghy regattas. The World’s best Laser and Laser Radial sailors are currently competing in the World Championships in Perth and a number have expressed interest in extending their trip to include competing in New Zealand in order to make the most of the southern hemisphere summer.

This international interest can also be attributed to the fact that our current New Zealand olympic squad in both the mens and womans fleet are acknowledged as among the best in the world. Among the international sailors that are suggested to be considering competing are the 2008 Olympic champion Paul Goodison from Great Brittan, and triple world champion and 2010 World Sailor of the year, Tom Slingsby from Australia. This creates a unique opportunity for local laser sailors to come to Wellington to compete amongst, or merely witness some of the best sailors in the world competing in New Zealand waters.

This event traditionally has the unique appeal of not only being an elite level event, but also a competitive environment for the future stars from ages 13 through to a very competitive fleet of ‘past’ stars in the Masters age divisions – including some competitors well into their sixth decade of life. There are expected to be between 150 and 200 competitors in Wellington for this event.

The Worser Bay Boating club has a built a reputation for successfully hosting a number of the country’s largest sailing dinghy regattas including twice hosting the optimist dinghy nationals with over 200 competitors competing. These events have showcased Wellington as a vibrant and exciting destination both on and off the water. Competitors always look forward to coming to Wellington for the much anticipated conditions on the water as well as vast opportunities to enjoy the life stye and all that wellington has to offer off the water.

The host club Worser Bay is well represented on the water with local sailor Josh Junior, a member of the New Zealand sailing team among the top competitors vying for Olympic selection. In July 2011 Josh was ranked second in the world and placed sixth at the 2010 World Championships. In the 2011 New Zealand Championships Josh narrowly missed out on winning the event by one point. Additionally, fellow Worser Bay sailors Andrew Dellabarca and Edmund Tam also narrowly missed winning their events in the masters divisions by a single point.

Additionally, recently Andrew Dellabarca won the North Island Laser Championship and Edmund Tam finished second in the 2011 World Masters Laser Championships behind fellow New Zealander and double world champion Scott Leith. Worser Bay is also the home club of double World Champion Karl Purdie and double Junior World champion Mathew Stevens both in the single handed OK dinghy class.
