Workforce Marine Mumm 30 Australian titles Day 2

Overnight leader in the 2007 Workforce Marine MUMM 30 Australian Championship, Victorian Bruce Eddington had another good day on the race track with a fourth place in race six of the series his worst result so far. The fleet headed out to race on the same track as yesterday off Palm Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches to find a 17 knot nor’east breeze and a slight swell.

The first race of the day and Eddington’s team on K2 displayed fantastic crew work to build and extend on their lead and win by six boat lengths from another previous Mumm 30 National Champion, Chris Way. There were a few stronger gusts on the finish line and a couple of boats who were heading for the finish with a shy kite had a difficult time and rounded up on the line but recovered well to cross without any major problems.

Race six of the series and K2 was boxed in on the start line while Way's team on Way Cool Racing had a great start which they capitalised on. Ten of the 11 boats racing went left on the first windward leg and Way Cool Racing manoeuvred into the front of the pack which they then lead around the course to take the gun from Chris Tillett’s Port Dock Ginja. Tillett’s team have travelled across from South Australia to race against the building Australian fleet and try for another name plate on the class's perpetual trophy.

'We’re really happy with how things are going and have done a fair bit of work on the boat to get ready for this event. We sailed today with no instruments so was a back to basics day. The boat is going well and I am sailing with a number of my regular crew. It’s great for the Australian fleet to have 11 boats racing and to have them from across the country', commented Way.

In the final race for the day the breeze had eased off to 12 knots and swung slightly east to a east nor’east direction. First time to the bottom of the course on the two lap windward leeward course and K2, Guy Stening’s Optimumm and Port Dock Ginja all rounded at the gate within three boat lengths of each other. Port Dock Ginja edged out the other two boats to win the race and be awarded the boat of the day flag after a countback on the two top boats results.

'It’s been really good close one design racing and the best Nationals fleet so far', said Tillet after racing.

'We didn’t have such a good day yesterday but we’ve sorted a few things out and had better crew work and pace today. It’s great to sail against other class boats I’ve always enjoyed class racing. We are hoping to build the South Australian MUMM 30 fleet so we have a few local teams to race against', he continued.

The weather forecast is for light variable breeze of 5 knots from the East Nor’east building to 8-13 knots in afternoon. Racing concludes tomorrow with the final two races being sailed to crown the 2007 National champion.
