'Doris Little, tireless driver of the WISC series, whom the trophy is named in memory of. - Women in Sailing Challenge (WISC)'

The Women in Sailing Challenge 2013 (WISC) gets underway this Sunday 3 March at Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC). The two-day regatta – the second day is on 7 April – has been encouraging women to compete on Port Phillip waters for 13 years. SYC club member Doris Little, who passed away last year, was the driver of the series, tirelessly championing it and encouraging boat owners to loan their prize possession to female skippers for a weekly race. Doris gave the series its ‘WISC’ badge - as well as the one of the best prizes on the bay, a week’s yacht charter in the Whitsundays courtesy of Queensland Yacht Charters! Although that’s no longer on offer, the spirit of Doris lives on in the Doris Little Women in Sailing perpetual trophy, named in fond memory of her as a friend, a mentor and a ‘doer’ – someone who always made newcomers feel welcome. WISC is open to any female skipper - and the more female crew the merrier! While male crew members are welcomed, they aren’t allowed as helm, foredeck or mainsail trimmer. Doris, on her boat L’Attitude, was winner of the series for two years – a feat most deserved. Doris raced in the true spirit of WISC – with mostly novice sailors on board. For the past two years, sailors from Royal Brighton Yacht Club have dominated the leader board, with Kathy De Garis on Allegresse winning PHD, and Kate Christensen’s Audacious taking out IRC and AMS. Get your entries in now to challenge them!
