At the 6pm radio sked, Steven David's Reichel Pugh 60 'Wild Joe' led the 210nm Pittwater to Pittwater race, by 20 miles from Peter Harburg's 'Spirit of Queensland.

Wild Joe has blasted around Boondelbah Island off Port Stephens and at sked time was already nine miles south heading towards Botany Bay, in a softening north easterly.

Still heading north was the 66 foot 'Spirit of Queensland', the former Xena/Grundig/AAPT. She took line honours in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour race in 2001 and 2002.

According to the 6pm radio sked report a Coffs Harbour entry, Paul D'Olier's B52 was in third place.

If the Sydney 41’s B52’s position report is correct, it places her just three miles off Spirit of Queensland transom, a remarkable effort, this would make her the clear leader in the PHS class.

There are another 20 boats within three miles of each other. At sked time winds were gusting to 14 knots but have since eased to 8-10 knots from the north east. Bernie Van’t Hof’s Tulip, the Swan 45 formerly Joe and Ginger, the overall series leader Bill Ebsary’ s Beneteau First 44.7 Le Billet are the leaders of this next group.

On handicap in the IRC Division, race organisers advise that Wild Joe leads from 'Spirit of Queensland' with Le Billet third ahead of Geoff and Chris Payne’s Sydney 38 Risk.

In PHS on handicap, the 6pm sked report indicates that B52 leads from Anthony Pickering’s Sydney 38 Love Byte and Ray Hudson’s X-442 Next Moment. The two Sayer 12’s Michael Martin’s Frantic and Ken Down’s Wasabi are fourth and fifth.

Wild Joe, the former Wild Oats IX, is the current race record holder of the Pittwater to Coffs Race. She set the record time of 18hrs 29 mins 14 secs in 2003.

Assuming she finishes the race Wild Joe will set a hard to beat inaugural race record for the new Pittwater to Pittwater course, however race organisers and Coffs Harbour community hope her time is not challenged in future years.
