The 2009 winter match racing programme got underway in Wellington this weekend with light winds and plenty of sun! This winter 34 sailors from almost every club in Wellington have joined the winter match racing programme which is delivered by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club sailing academy.
'The programme runs from May through to September and introduces young sailors to match racing in the Port Nicholson Yachting Trust’s fleet of four Elliot 6m yachts' explains youth scheme coordinator Dean Stanley. 'We had a great weekend to get things underway. There wasn’t a whole lot of wind which is always great on the first weekend as sailors become familiar with the boats and get used to the process of towing in and out of the marina.'
In addition to the introductory programme the 13 sailors who have been selected into the 2009-10 Wellington Under 21 and Women’s Match Racing squad began their training this weekend. Sailors are selected into the squad for twelve months and train through out the year in preparation for the Trans Tasman youth match racing regattas.
'We are really pleased with the mixture of old hands and new talent that have been invited into the squad this year. We are particularly excited with the women’s team who although young an inexperienced at this stage already show a lot of potential for 2016' said Stanley.
