Warsash Spring Series prizegiving

by Flavia Bateson on 22 May 2013
Prize winners for the Brooks Macdonald Warsash Spring Series with the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Susan Bayford, and John Wallace, Regional Director Brooks Macdonald Iain McLuckie
Warsash SC was packed on 17th May for the prize giving at the end of the thirtieth year of this premier racing event. It was also an opportunity to thank the 120 members who contributed to making it such a success and for giving enjoyment to over 1,000 sailors. John Wallace, Regional Director of sponsors Brooks Macdonald, presented the trophies with the Mayor of Fareham and Flag Officers from neighbouring clubs amongst the guests.

As well as the 50+ prizes for individual classes, special awards were also made. These are kept firmly under wraps until the night, so a great surprise for the recipients. The Commodore’s Cup, presented to a competitor in an IRC class, went to Mike Bridges of Elaine (IRC3). Mike has been a stalwart supporter of the event, often gaining a podium place and this year winning the class with the biggest turnout. The Founder’s Salver, for a non-IRC class, was awarded to another WSC member Jon Powell and the J/80 Betty which won the class by 13 points and included 11 first places throughout the Series and Championship.

The Brooks Macdonald Trophy, a yacht sculpture in stainless steel by John Mellows, went to a team which has great sportsmanship to their credit and who won both the Series and Championship in IRC1 - Tokoloshe. Everyone was delighted to see David Bartholomew, who helmed the first two races, accept the trophy on behalf of his father Michael, who is currently in South Africa.

To round off a highly enjoyable evening, John Wallace confirmed that Brooks Macdonald will be continuing their sponsorship into 2014 when the first racing gets underway on Sunday 16th March.
