Waka Racing reporting from Chicago Match Cup

by Waka Racing on 2 Oct 2011
Broach - Chicago Match Cup 2011 . ..
New Zealand matchracing team, Waka Racing, led by Phil Robertson, report after the final day of the Chicago Match Racing Cup :

Hi Guys,

Greetings Supporters, Family and Friends,

Wind, wind and more wind greeted us for the last two days of racing here in Chicago. With us qualifying 2nd for the quarter finals we picked USA legend Bill Hardesty. It went to the wire. We were going win for win with us, digging deep to win the last race by 3 feet. Exciting racing in extremely challenging conditions. We win 3-2

Keith Swinton was our opponent for the semi finals. The breeze was still smoking, forcing us to sail with reefed main sails. We lost the first race but came back strong to win the next after an outrageous finish. Keith sailed us both slightly past the finish line, and when we gybed we both broached, with him snagging the pin end and us sailing around him after scrambling to get the spinnaker back on board.
It didn't get any better for us. We were close but just struggled to match his up wind speed. He went on to win 3-1.

By this stage, the end of the second windy day, we were starting to feel the burn. We were now up against the Portuguese Alvaro Marino in the battle for 3rd. We trumped this one 2-0 but it was not easy. Winning both races by a small margin it ended a tough day and regatta on a high.

We now have a 6am flight tomorrow to get to Bermuda for the World Tour event. This starts on Tuesday and is sailed in the beautiful old IOD's.

A special thanks to all our sponsors Tax Management NZ, FedEx Express, KZ Race Furlers, Line 7, RNZYS, Devine Consultants, Frontend Design ad the Waka Racing Supporters Club. Without them we would not have this opportunity to race here and chase our dreams.

Regards,

The worn out Waka's
