The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is seeking the public’s help in selecting the winning projects in the competitive 2014 Grassroots Grants Program, which provides local non-profit groups up to $10,000 to help educate boaters on safe and clean boating topics. Anyone with a love for the water, boating and fishing is encouraged to go to either Facebook.com/BoatUSFoundation or BoatUS.org/grants/vote.asp to cast their vote. Of the six grant proposals listed, those with the most votes by midnight (EDT) on March 28th, 2014, will have their projects funded. A vote can be cast once a day until voting closes.

This year’s contenders are:

1. Florida: Florida Press Educational Services/Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education, St. Petersburg
2. Florida: Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Juno Beach
3. Idaho: Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper, Sandpoint
4. Illinois: Great Lakes Media/Kurtis Productions/Chicago Filmmakers of Chicago, IL
5. North Carolina: Safe Kids Wake County, Raleigh
6. Pennsylvania: Regional Science Consortium, Erie

Grant funds come from donations by the over half-million members of Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). In the last 25 years, the Foundation has awarded over $1.1 million to organizations that have developed creative projects to promote safe and clean boating on their local waterways.

'The stakes are higher with more funding available for our individual grants, which went from $4,000 to $10,000,' said BoatUS Foundation Program Manager Alanna Keating. 'Your vote could really make a difference to recreational boaters in these grant project areas,' she BoatUS

When whales meet sails
CAMPER helmsman Roberto ‘Chuny’ Bermudez found himself nearly face to face with whale in middle of North Atlantic Ocean. Currently the database for marine mammal strikes is very sparse. We are requesting sailors and boaters help to submit information on current and past incidents, however long ago that may be. By giving a location, date, identification if possible, and any other relevant information you can help scientists better understand where marine mammals are at risk for strikes
