Volvo Ocean Race: Boats allowed to haul - but at a points cost

Rulings by the International Jury on Monday night mean that Abu Dhabi and Team Telefónica will each have to accept a two point penalty if they chose to haul their boats out of the water for repairs.

Similarly, overall race leaders Groupama will be docked two points if they opt to lower their mast for repairs.

Under race rules, the fleet is required to stay in the water with their masts in place during the Lorient stopover, but damage to a keel fairing on Abu Dhabi, two broken rudders on Telefónica and mast problems on Groupama meant all three made requests to the jury for dispensation.

Under the terms of the ruling posted on the Official Noticeboard last night, only repairs specified in their requests may be carried out with any other remedial work or cleaning strictly prohibited. The time allowed for the haulout or craning is also limited

All three teams are yet to announce whether they will take the points deduction or find a way to effect the repairs afloat.

A separate request to the International Jury, by Telefonica relating to the repair of her rudders was denied.

Telefonica smashed two of her 'racing' rudders on the final day pf Leg 8 into Lorient, and requested the Jury's permission to replace these with a set of rudders of an older different design, citing a paralell permisison in the sail measurement rules for the race, and requesting that the International Jury apply the same principle to rudders.

The International Jury refused the request, and Telefonica must now build/repair two rudders to the same design and specification as those which failed and fit these into the boat for the Inport Race, Leg 9 to Galway Ireland and final Inport Race.
