It's now just 34 days to go until the fleet is scheduled to arrive in Auckland and our e-newsletter Event HQ brings you the latest news from the Race, the Auckland Stopover and the Race Village.

The 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race

The Race features nine Legs with Stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajai (Brazil), Miami (USA), Lisbon (Portugal) and Lorient (France) with the finish in Galway (Ireland) in July 2012.

Six teams have entered the Race, including CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand.

On the way to Auckland!

containersA team from Auckland was hard at work in Abu Dhabi getting 140 shipping containers ready to load on the ship for New Zealand for the Auckland Stopver.

The containers were loaded with equipment for the six participating teams, the massive Volvo Pavilion and other Race Village installations that make up the Volvo Experience.

The short intervals between Stopovers means that the Race organisers and participating teams have created two identical sets of equipment. Each set of containers leapfrogs the other around the world. Hence the containers for Auckland are coming from Abu Dhabi and then heading on to Miami while the other set leaves the Sanya Stopover for Itajai, Brazil.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) is responsible for maintaining biosecurity and all imports to New Zealand must meet strict standards before clearance by MAF.

MAF Quarantine Inspectors Warren Collier and Vincent Boyd, DHL Import Warehouse Team Leader Charlie Pawa and Ben Williams, the Logistics and Teams Manager for the Auckland Stopover, travelled to Abu Dhabi to work with the Volvo Ocean Race logistics team to ensure the containers and contents were free of contamination before the containers are sealed and loaded onto the ship. This MAF pre-clearance saves significant time as it means that the containers can be transported directly into the Auckland Race Village rather than having to undergo biosecurity checks on entry to New Zealand.

“We have a very tight build schedule for the Auckland Race Village,” says Port Director Tom Mayo. “We are very grateful to MAF for their assistance in working with us in Abu Dhabi to set up this pre-clearance for the Volvo Ocean Race containers.”

TV coverage from Auckland

Broadcasters from all round the globe will be showing coverage of the action from the Auckland Stopover.

Some 50 broadcasters have signed up for all or part of the worldwide feed, which includes live coverage of the In-Port Race, live coverage of the Leg Start, a one hour Leg documentary and a 30 minute In-Port Race and Leg highlights programme.

In addition, a number of international broadcasters will send crews to cover the Auckland Stopover both on and off the water.

The worldwide feed production team visited Auckland last month to finalise plans for television coverage. TVNZ is the New Zealand rights holder for the Volvo Ocean Race and is planning extensive coverage for its home port Stopover. More on that soon.

Business Ready initiative

An Auckland Stopover Business Ready kit is about to be distributed to businesses to assist in preparations for the Stopover.

"We want to ensure that businesses, particularly ones local to the Race Village, are fully primed for the Stopover," says Port Director Tom Mayo. "The Business Ready kit informs them about the event, assists with planning and preparation and offers access to resources for businesses keen to get involved with our promotional materials and Adopt-a-Team programme."

A series of Forums will be held for local businesses over the next weeks.
