Volvo Ocean Race - Camper contemplates perfect conditions + Video

'CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, back in sunny sailing conditions, during leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajai, Brazil.'    Hamish Hooper/Camper ETNZ/Volvo Ocean Race©    Click Here to view large photo

In the Volvo Ocean Race, Camper are near 500 miles to the Leg 5 finish, media crew member Hamish Hooper contemplates perfect sailing conditions, the quick turnaround in Itajai, Brazil and what constitutes 'normality' for his team.

After a short duration on deck today the guys onboard were showing a heightened level of concern for me as they thought the 10 minutes in the sun might bring on a bad case of sunstroke. I was flattered at their concern.

It was too nicer day to be caught below decks all day, so the social gatherings continued on from yesterday with varying levels of conversation. It was even suggested that today was one of the most pleasant days sailing we have had onboard Camper.

A nice 15- 18 knots of breeze sailing along at around the same speed over flat water with spinnaker up, not too cold and not too hot… just right.

As always it concerns me how easily times of hardship and suffering are so easily forgotten forever. It seems incomprehensible that we were frozen and battered around Cape Horn only days ago.

We are now continuing up the South American coast, not far off passing north of Buenos Aires and the River Plate -- one of the world’s great cities. As always no time to stop, we have our second day off in two months to make the most of in Brazil. Then right back into preparing to sail to America. I guess the good thing is with this schedule is that I will be quite comfortable getting back on the boat again to start the next leg as it will be resuming life ‘as normal’.

As always at this time of each leg, moral is on the up in direct correlation to the miles going down. Although in saying this Animal (Andrew McLean) lost his challenge with Nico for the can of Coke. Despite this he is still in good spirits.

As Mike got up for his watch this afternoon I asked him how he was? After hiding it so well for long- his answer: ‘Frustrated!’ He has continued to work on the broken water maker all day today, whittling down the possibilities for what the trouble is but still no joy in solving the problem. I still have faith in Mike repairing it before the finish line… which is now 632.65mn away.

I think it’s time to go to sleep -- I am tired, but the real reason is that it is the best way to make miles vanish.
