With the help of Virtual Eye, Sail-World's America's Cup editor, Richard Gladwell looks at the key points of Race 1, of the 33rd America's Cup, and some of the performance differences between USA-17 and Alinghi 5.

Above: In probably the defining moment of the 33rd America's Cup, USA-17 caught Alinghi 5 on port tack soon after the two entered the start box for the first race.

Many felt that Alinghi was a little hard done by in the decision, believing that USA-17 had continued to alter course to catch the Swiss defender. However as the tracks confirm, in the image below, the Challenger held a straight course for a reasonable period and Alinghi had made the wrong choice of avoiding maneuver.

Alinghi then turned the tables on USA-17, forcing her over the startline by almost 110 metres, and getting her into a position where her wingsail had stalled.

By the time USA-17 had recovered, she was two minutes late for the start and had lost almost 650 metres on the Defender.

However the Challenger, although starting to leeward was able to sail higher and faster, into a building breeze and within 15 minutes had drawn level with the Defender. Interestingly this track shows that Alinghi held an almost constant angle, while USA-17 was able to pull across her track while in pointing mode and then settle down on the Swiss yacht's course, and simple sail faster at the same angle.

At the windward mark, after sailing for 90 minutes and starting 650metres astern, USA-17 was able to stretch out to a lead of over 2000metres.
