Conrad Colman an impecunious young Kiwi 'battler' is a qualified entry in the forthcoming Vendee Globe Race racing the 2003 Angelo Lavranos Designed Open 60 100% Natural.
She was originally built as a 'wet Preg' Carbon/Nomex in Brazil and launched in 2005 as Galileo. She was always short of money and experience but raced hard in Fastnet races (still managing eighth out of 16 new Open 60 in the 2007 Fastnet) and several TJV’s.
In the 2009 Vendee Globe named Maisonneuve she restarted late after a structural issue but was averaging the same daily milages as well placed Roxy (Sam Davis) till she retired with a broken mainsail South of New Zealand.
Now Conrad, after an arduous refit missed racing 100% Natural the Vendee to NY race but did his qualifying sail there and starting 24 hours late raced back in the NY to Vendee (oldest boat in the race by far, with old sails) doing a similar time to the fancied Virbac and beating some other newer boats too. Conrad is doing it on a shoestring and deserves support in the forthcoming Vendee Globe!
