Velux 5 Oceans British solo sailor Chris Stanmore-Major made a clean sweep of the sprint two media awards last night at the official prize-giving ceremony. The 33-year-old won all three media prizes for best conveying the highs and the lows of The Ultimate Solo challenge through blogs, photographs and videos during the 7,500 nautical mile leg between Cape Town and Wellington.

Stanmore-Major, known as CSM, was awarded €5,000 for his efforts which included filming a video of his passage through the Cook Strait in more than 40 knots of wind and huge seas. The media awards were judged by Velux 5 Oceans communications director Tim Kelly, Velux press manager Ghita Borring and Kiwi journalist Neil Reid.

More than 100 people packed Wellington’s Te Papa museum last night for the official Velux 5 Oceans sprint two prize-giving. Guests included Wellington deputy mayor Ian McKinnon, Velux New Zealand general manager Horst Brenner and Maersk Line New Zealand managing director Julian Bevis.

American ocean racer and current race leader Brad Van Liew was crowned winner of ocean sprint two after completing the leg in 32 days. Van Liew also took the sprint two bonus points for completing the quickest passage through the speed gates between latitudes 75 East and 50 East.

Each of the skippers was presented with a Maori necklace from Velux New Zealand along with a framed photograph of their yacht in action. The sustainability award was given to Polish racer Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski for his blog on the ocean sprint two theme of water. The sustainability theme for ocean sprint three is food.
