US Melges 24 - Bombarda Racing makes debut in Miami

Andrea Pozzi’s Bombarda Racing team made their US debut in the Melges 24 class this week at the Miami Yacht Club Melges 24 Invitational Regatta. The team came from Italy to compete in their first of a series of US Melges 24 regattas planned over the next 12 months, culminating with the 2016 Melges 24 World Championship next November.

Pozzi is a seasoned Melges 32, Melges 20, and RC44 sailor, but 2015 is his first year in the Melges 24. Team Bombarda stepped aboard ITA 841 for the first time this March in Genoa, sparring with Riccardo Simoneschi’s Audi Italia Sailing Team in some late winter training sessions. An aggressive spring and summer program for Bombarda included Italy’s three-part Audi Tron Sailing Series and the 2015 Melges 24 World Championship in Denmark in July.

Here in Miami, Pozzi and team had their sights set on some heavy wind racing on the Atlantic Ocean. A warm front kept the conditions unstable and mostly light for the first two days, and only today did the 20 competing teams see some stronger wind and bigger wave action. The fleet sailed two races in 10-15 knots from the south, with lumpy seas and passing squalls.

Bombarda finished the six-race regatta in ninth place in a very competitive fleet. Bruce Ayres in Monsoon (USA 747) took first, followed closely by Conor Clarke’s Embarr (IRL 829) and Martin Kullman’s New Wave (USA 515).

Andrea Pozzi commented on the experience: “It was a training event for us—preparation, naturally, for Worlds. And these conditions are very different from those we’re used to in Europe. This was a key step in our path to the World Championship and therefore we’re really happy as a team to have this experience. We’ll be here again in January for Key West Race Week, and also for another regatta here in March. Training here with these strong American teams gives us a real opportunity to improve.”

Bombarda’s Miami Invitational team consisted of Andrea Pozzi at the helm, tactician Giulio Desiderato, trimmer Stefano Ciampalini, pitman Francesco Pozzi, and Carlo Zermini on the bow. Coach Nico Celon, shore team members Federico Valenti and Paolo Figini, and cook Fabio Alfieri helped support the team. Pozzi and Team Bombarda sail for Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

Bombarda Racing wears Helly Hansen gear, and is sponsored by Wide Care Services and Generali Italia.
