U.S. Singlehanded Championships - Close leaderboard after day one
|
2010 U.S. Singlehanded Championships (USSC), hosted by the Pensacola Yacht Club (Fla.). The competition was great and the standings are close atop the leaderboard after day one. Fred Strammer (Nokomis, Fla.) and Sean Kelly (San Francisco, Calif.) are locked in a tie for first place through four races. Sarah Stubbs (Rye, N.Y.) has a six point lead through four races in the women’s division. Leonie Shuurmans (Houston, Texas) was in control of the fleet for most of the day. She won three-out-four races, but finished 12th in race three to drop six points behind the leader. 'Race three was a tough one because I missed a big shift and had a hard time getting back in the phase,' said Shuurmans. Stubbs was consistent throughout the day and finished with an impressive scoring line of 2-2-2-3. 'The lengths of the course helped because I could work back and pick up boats in the fleet,' mentioned Stubbs. There is a tie for third place between Christine Neville (Richmond, Vt.) and Rebekka Urbina (League City, Texas), who are 10 points behind Stubbs. Other notables include Callie Naughton (Marblehead, Mass.), who won race three and is in a tie for sixth. It appeared Strammer would finish the day in first place alone. He won the first two races of the regatta and finished second in race three. A seventh place finish in the final contest of the day dropped him into a tie with Kelly who was consistent all day. Kelly posted a 3-2-4-2 scoring line today. US Sailing Development Team member, John Wallace (St. Petersburg, Fla.), is in third place and seven points behind Strammer and Kelly. Strammer, the former two-time U.S. Junior Triplehanded Champion, is a member of the Brown University sailing team and a 2010 ICSA Honorable Mention All-American Coed Skipper. Wind speed ranged from 8-14 knots in races one and two and dropped to 4-9 knots in races three and four. The heat index reached 100 degrees. This US Sailing National Championship event runs through Sunday. Women are racing in Radials and the men are sailing Lasers on Pensacola Bay. The U.S. Singlehanded Championships are open to male and female sailors 16 and older.
