Two silver medals for New Zealand at Kiel Week |
New Zealand sailors have won silver medals in two classes at Kiel Week after the conclusion of the Medal race round. In the Mens Laser class, Michael Bullot has claimed second place overall behind the 2008 Gold Medalist in the class, Paul Goodison (GBR). Bullot finished just one point ahead of Daniel Mihelic (CRO) after the New Zealander finished 4th in the double points scoring Medal race. which was won by Goodison, with Mihelic second. New Zealand's other silver medal came in the Star class with a new but very experienced combination of 2008 Olympic representative, Hamish Pepper, sailing with his new crew, Craig Monk a Bronze medalist in the 1992 Olympics in the Finn class, who then bulked up to be a grinder for Team New Zealand in the 2000 America's Cup, before shifting to other teams and both are now with BMW Oracle Racing. Pepper and Monk won the Medal race to just head off 2008 Olympic Gold medallists, Iain Percy and 'Bart' Simpson (GBR) - after Medal race places were used to break a tie on points. The event was won by Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Strube (USA). In the Finn class, New Zealand's Daniel Slater finished fourth overall, still a very credible result after being in the hunt for a medal prior to the final day. Just five races were sailed in the Finn and Star class events in what proved to be a light air regatta. In the 49er class, no New Zealand crews made the cut for the medal race with the best placed crew David McDiarmid and (1983) Andrew Archibald (Mangonui CC) finishing 11th overall. They only missed the medal race on a tie break - a remarkable performance.
